GULLFOSS-GEY SIR-HVERAGERDI
Driving through Reykjavik, the bus
tour goes to Thingvellier, the ancient
site of the Icelandic Althing, which
is the oldest legislative body in the
world still in existence.
The route continues to Geysir through
the education and summer hotel center
located at Laugarvatn. Geysir is the
most famous of all spouting hot springs
in the world, giving its name to all
others. Unfortunately, it was inactive
for a long time until 1974 when it
gave a few good performances. Although
Geysir is notoriously unreliable, there
are other hot springs around it which
spout regularly.
From Geysir, the tour proceeds to
Gullfoss (The Golden Waterfall) which
falls into a deep canyon in the Hvita
(White River). Gullfoss is considered
one of the most beautiful waterfalls in
Europe. Return to Keflavik is through
Hveragerdi and Reykjavik.
HVITARBAKKI
Hvitarbakki is a recreational faci-
lity, leased by the Navy, located in
the lush farming district of Borgarf-
jordur about 100 miles northeast of Kef-
lavik. • Hvitarbakki is an ideal recrea-
tion area regardless of your interest.
If you are looking for relaxation, you
will find the peace and quietness only
available in the Icelandic countryside.
The Hvita River runs through the
leased area, and, for the super fisher-
man, there is the challenge of trying
for fish, which is free. During the
hunting season hunting duck and goose
may be your game.
And, for those who like horses, there
is horseback riding. Finally, there is
a barn full of playground equipment for
the children.

Reservations are necessary for stay-
ing at the lodging and must be made and

individual camping are not required.

4-Wheelers assist scientists
A research expedition of British sci-
entists arrived July 28 for 12 days of
exploration into the interior of Iceland.
The expedition is sponsored by the Royal
Air Force and is based at Kinloss, Scot-
land. The team is visiting Iceland as
part of an advance team for a major re-
search expedition planned for next sum-
mer.
When plans for land transportation
for the trip fell through, the RAF asked
if any local assistance could be provi-
ded. Without land transportation, the
trip faced possible cancellation.
Volunteers from the Rocky Road Four
Wheelers were able to provide enough
vehicles and drivers to go ahead with
trip plans. The team of seven scientists
and 1,000 pounds of supplies and research
equipment left Saturday towards a base
camp at Myvatn.
The Four Wheelers are providing trans-
portation to the camp and then into the
Odaohraun lava desert, Mount Askja and
onto the north side of Vatnjokull gla-
cier. The Four Wheelers will also assist
with the experiments as well as provide
transportation for the scientists.
The researchers consist of scientists
from universities and the geology depart-
ment. They intend to explore the volcan^-
ic activity in the Myvatn area and bird
behavior and attraction. The expedition
is headed by Flight Lieutenant
Fitzpatrick of the RAF.
Volunteers from the Four Wheelers
along on the expedition are Master Ser-
geant Fawcett, Staff Sergeant Kromanaker
and Chief MacAlester. Captain Hayden of
the Marine Barracks is also accompanying
them and is driving a pickup, furnished
by the Naval Station. The expedition
will end at Keflavik Tuesday.
