Tours and travel
by Debbie Rawls
A fast-growing and popular tour-
ist resort in North Iceland, Akur-
eyri is an ideal place to spend the
weekend. From Akureyri, many
places of unique, natural beauty
are within easy reach. Take a tour
across the mountain to the east of
town where there is the famous wa-
terfall Gudafoss and then on far-
ther east to the Myvatn District.
In lunar setting, dotted with
weird projecting islets, Lake Myva-
tn is a bird sanctuary with the
largest concentration of breeding
ducks in the world.
At Lake Myvatn, a geothermal
area, Naraskard, is where you.will
see bubbling sulfur pits and natur-
al hot water springs. Nearby, Dim-
muborgir (Dark Castles) with its
towering lava formations stands and
was created 2,500 years ago.
Other tours out of Akureyri go
to Dettifoss waterfall and the
Askja volcano which last erupted in
1961 and is still smoking.
In Akureyri, a wide selection of
merchandise in a variety of shops
offers interesting souvenirs and
pieces of artistic value. During
the day you can visit the local
museums, which honor the mem-
ory of famous poets who lived in
Akureyri. In the evening you can
visit places which offer a wide
choice of food, drink and live en-
tertainment .
The Tour Office is taking reser-
vations for its yearly Thanksgiving
tour to London. The Icelandair
Boeing 727 will depart Keflavik on
November 23 at 9 p.m. and depart
London at 11 p.m. on November 26.
A perfect opportunity for a "96",
stop by the Tour Office in the
Viking Mall or call 4420 or 4200.

The La Leche League is a non
profit, non sectarian organization
that meets each month to encourage
"good mothering through breastfeed-

which means "the milk".
During a series of four meetings,
different phases of breastfeeding
are discussed. The four main topics
are: The advantages of breastfeed-
ing, the art of breastfeeding and
overcoming difficulties, baby ar-
rives; the family and the breastfed
baby and nutrition and weaning.
Each meeting is repeated every
four months. The discussions are
very informal so any questions are
welcome.

Nurturing children
through nutrition
are their babies. You need not be
pregnant or even have a family to
attend. If you are a wife and hope
to someday have children or are just
interested, you are invited.
La Leche League began in a Chi-
cago suburb 22 years ago when one
mother who had successfully nursed
her baby and helped another who
wanted to breastfeed hers.
This is still the basic concept,,
although the League is now interna-
tional in scope, with more than
4,000 groups helping thousands of
women in the U. S., Canada and 44
foreign countries.
For further information about La
Leche contact Terri Cecchini at
