In 9th lifesaving mission
Det.
14 saves lives
Responding to a call from the
Icelandic Lifesaving Association,
Detachment 14 accomplished its
ninth 1978 lifesaving mission
Saturday.
Diverted from an earlier support
mission while airborne, Air Force
717, the HH-3E "Jolly Green Giant",
and Air Force Rescue 826, an HC-130
"Hercules", proceeded to Flatey, an
island located 85 miles north of
Keflavik.
There, an Icelandic farmer was
suffering acute abdominal pains,
caused by what appeared to be the
passing of a kidney stone.
While AFR 826 orbited overhead,
the helicopter landed and onloaded
the patient, with the pararescue-
men and flight surgeon initiating
relief for the man's discomfort.
The rescue forces then continued
toward Reykjavik, where medical
personnel awaited their arrival.
After the patient's transfer to
a waiting ambulance at Reykjavik
Airport, the helicopter returned
to Keflavik, with the HC-130 al-
ready landed.
One "save" was credited to both
crews, bringing Det. 14's 1978
total to nine, with 138 lives
having been saved since Det. 14's
arrival at Keflavik in November
1971.
The AFR 717 crew consisted of
Captain Lou Matz, aircraft com-
mander; First Lieutenant Dave
Pierce, copilot; Sergeant Tom
Berry, flight mechanic; Master
Sergeant Rick Garlie and Airman
First Class Dave Donaldson, para-
rescuemen, and Lieutenant Comman-
der John Bigbee, flight surgeon.
The AFR 826 crew, temporarily
assigned from the 67th Aerospace
Rescue and Recovery Squadron at
Royal Air Force Woodbridge, United
Kingdom, also participated. They
are: Major Ron Cote, aircraft com-
mander; Captain Thiery Curtis, co-
pilot; Major Bob Call, navigator;
Master Sergeant Otto Fischer, flight
engineer; Staff Sergeant Paul
Olszewski, radio operator; Master
Sergeant Art Baxter, load master,
Staff Sergeant Don Aldridge and
Airman First Class Don Hanes,
pararescuemen.

iority of the E-3A. We are anxious
to get on with our mission."
The E-3A is a modified Boeing
707-320 aircraft, which carries an
advanced surveillance radar, so-
phisticated navigation, communica-
tions equipment and a command and
control computer. A 30-foot rotat-
ing dome, housing the radar antenna
is mounted externally above the fu-
selage, behind the wings.
The system-provides an effective
means for deployment of the neces-
sary surveillance and command and
control capabilities for detection,
identification, tracking and inter-
ception of any potentially hostile
aircraft.
The 552nd AWACW, home-based at
Tinker AFB, OK, is responsible for
maintaining and employing the en-
tire U. S. Air Force fleet of E-3A
