Tours and travel
by Debbie Rawls
The Tour Office will be offer-
ing three package tours to Mallor-
ca during October. These will be
Oct. 1 for 22 days, Oct 8 for 15
or 22 days and Oct. 15 for 15
days.
A beautiful island of many con-
trasts, Mallorca has magnificent
pine-covered mountains, rich farm-
lands, rustic villages, quaint
fishing ports, majestic old man-
sions and long, sandy beaches and
coves. With a sea of pure blue
and moderate temperatures year-
round, it is an ideal vacation
spot. Swimming, sailing and fish-
ing are possible during any sea-
son.
If you wish to break the "mon-
otony" of going to the beach every
day, visit Bellver Castle. Erec-
ted in the 14th century, this
hilltop, moated castle was once
the home of Mallorca kings.
Outside of town, see El Pueblo
Espanol (Spanish Village). This
is a specially built "museum-town"
in which the character, architec-
ture and tradition of Old Spain
come alive.
While in Mallorca, shop for
fine hand-embroidered articles,
olive-wood carvings, artistic
glass work, palm leaf and rattan
objects and artificial pearls (for
which Mallorca is famous).
For those of you flying to
Athens in October, the Tour Office
offers these notes of interest:
All the leading hotels maintain
first-class restaurants, often
with French cuisine, some with
dancing and cabaret in the even-
ings.
For local cooking, try one of
the many tavernas in the old dis-
trict of Plaka beneath the Acro-
polis. Some Greek specialities to
ask for are Dolmadakia (lamb ser-
ved with vine leaves, stuffed with
seasoned rice and currants); Souv-
laki (portions of meat grilled on
skewers); Moussaka (layers of
minced meat and eggplant or arti-
choke topped with a cheese sauce
and baked).
Join a coach party one evening
to see the dramatic presentation
of Greek history in Sound and
Light at the Acropolis, continuing
afterwards to Philopappos Hill and
finishing with a display of folk
dancing in the open air by the
Dora Stratou group. Or take an
evening tour which includes a
drink by the seashore at Tourkol-
imano, followed by dinner in a
typical Greek taverna with bousuki
music and folk dancing.
Sights to see: Morning tours,
leaving Constitution Square, visit
the Royal Palace, Temple of Olym-
pian Zeus, Arch of Hadrian, Byzan-
tine Museum, Benaki Museum, Archa-
eological Museum and Byzantine
churches. Afternoon tours will
take you to the Lysicrates Monu-
ment, Odeon of Herodes Atticus,
Acropolis, Areopagos, Socrates’
prison Theseum, Tower of the Winds
and Ancient Agora. Tickets for
these tours are available at all
travel agencies.
What to buy: Woolen blankets
and rugs (flokates); gold, silver,
and bronze ware; earthenware and
black pottery; weaving and em-
broidery; woodcarvings. Small
dolls dressed in the picturesque
costume of the Royal Guard make
particularly popular souvenirs.
The Tour Office is offering
weekly package tours to London
throughout October. Also, don't
forget the Thanksgiving trip to
London for which reservations are
to be taken. Come by the Tour
Office for more information or
call 4200 or 4420.
