AT Mahan High School
Athletes
Since the opening of school, the
A.T. Mahan High School has been
participating in the nationwide
Presidential Physical Fitness Com-
petition.
The competition concluded last
week when Denise Parker set three
records in six events.
The sophomore from Hawaii main-
tained a blistering A pace in the
running and jumping vents. She
bettered the previous girls' mark
in the 600-yard run with a 1:42 by
more than 10 seconds held by Anne
Meyer.
In the 50-yard dash, her time
tied the previous mark of 6:5 held
by Annette Von Ronne.
Her best performance came in the
standing broad jump when she sailed
to a 7 ft. 9 in. mark, besting the
previous mark by eight inches, held
by Kim Sefton. Based in her out-
standing performances, she was vot-
ed the meet's outstanding per-
former.
In the girls' competition, only
Mary McNeer's 9.0 shuttle run and
Gayanne Hilty's 51:2 flexed-arra
set records byR
hang survived the competition.
Tammy Patterson's three-year record
of 59 situps, done in one minute,
was tied by freshman Theresa Slowey.
In the boys' competition, old
records were battered as this year's
athletes set a rallied pace. This
was set by newcomers Buddy and Tony
Gilbert who broke records in the
50-yard dash and pullups, respective-
ly. . Buddy, the lithe speedster,
broke the previous mark held by
Paul Gilstrap with a 5.9 clocking in
the 50-yard dash. Strongman Tony
broke Prince Parker's record of 18
pullups with a grand £otal of 20.
Parker had set the record earlier in
the week only to see it broken by
the muscular Gilbert.
One of the youngest competitors
in the meet, Joe Slowey, broke the
boys' mark in situps. Slowey went
all out after Tyson Cheek's 63,
besting by one for a 64 in one
minute.
One of the last records to be
broken was the standing broad jump,
held by Buddy Gilbert, who broke
Richard L'ehne's mark of 8 ft. 3 in-
ches with a leap of 8 ft. 6 inches.
ene C Mahone
His mark stood until Jim Fleming
jumped 8 ft. 7 inches for a new
mark.
Greg Dougherty, the son of coach
Darrell Dougherty, will be a welcome
transfer for the Viking athletic
program. Records were broken in five
of six boys' events and the one sur-
viving record, the 600-yard, run was
tied.
Widely used throughout the coun-
try, the National Youth Fitness Test
assesses physical strength, stamina,
speed, agility and coordination.
Any girl or boy, who scores at or
above the 85th percentile for his or
her age group on the boys' and
girls' standards, respectively on
all six items of the test is eligi-
ble for the Presidential Award.
They must be students in good stand-
ing, recommended by the school prin-
cipal. The following students won
this award: Jim Fleming, Theresa
Sloey, Deeanne Wardman, Maria
Maticko, David Burnett, Marshall
Day, John King, Susie Rhow, Debbie
Sturm, Danis Armando, Brian Woods,
Gayanne Hilty, Alan Pierre, Tony
