Rescue
continued from page 1
However, the helicopter was even-
tually forced to climb into the
clouds to avoid the rising terrain.
’Receiving radar vectors from the
HC-130, the helicopter proceeded di-
rectly to Reykjavik and broke out
of the cloud cover over the city.
After landing at the Reykjavik
airport, the patient was brought to
a waiting ambulance. The mission
credited First Lieutenant J.J.
Walters with his first save as an
aircraft commander.
On Friday afternoon, Det 14
launched Air Force Rescue 717 again,
this time to pick up an Icelandic
auto accident victim with a broken
back. As the helicopter approached
the pick-up site, the crew encoun-
tered a massive snow storm. With
visibility down to a half-mile and
less, and the ceilings sometimes ap-
proaching the surface, Captain Sam
Rogers, the helicopter commander,
was faced to fly down the only
Improved the road in the area to
find the town of Kirkjubaejarklau-
stur, where the patient was waiting.
Once the man was onboard, LCdr.
•John Bigbee, attending flight sur-
geon, along with Sgt, Tom Stone and
A1C Dave Donaldson, Det 14 parares-
cuemen, evaluated the man’s condi-
tion and continued to monitor his
vital signs during the return
to Reykjavik. Once again the crew
encountered snow showers and low
cloud cover in the vicinity of Reyk-
javik. As done Monday, King 50
carefully guided the ’Jolly* into
Reykjavik with radar vectors until
the helicopter crew was able to take
over visually and land at Reykjavik
airport and discharge their patient.
The crew, of King 50, lLt. Mike Nel-
son, Sgt. Tom Berry, and A1C Dave
Donaldson were credited with their
second save of the week.
The second mission brought the
detachment's save total to 142 since
its establishment in October 1971.
