•Ch ristmas trees on sale
Yes, the Christmas season is
here again! Adults on the Naval
Station have been trying to avoid
the Christmas rush by shopping
early; children are behaving better
than ever for fear of ol* Santa
not bringing lots of goodies and
everyone is spreading Christmas
cheer.
Christmas trees went on sale
yesterday morning at the Navy Ex-
change. So, people will be busy
trimming the tree with brightly
colored lights, bulbs and icicles.
Decorating the Christmas tree
is one of the best parts of Christ-
mas, but everyone should take pre-
caution to avoid Christmas tree
fires.
According to S.R. Eiriksson, the
J^ire Chief of the Keflavik Fire
^fcpartment, a special recipe can be
Weed to preserve and fire proof your
Christmas tree.
The recipe is as follows:
a. Cut 1" off the bottom of the
trunk to expose fresh wood.
b. Place tree in stand.
c. Make the following solution:
(1) Gallon Water
(2) 8 ozs sugar syrup
(3) 2 ozs chlorine bleach
(4) 2 pinches of epsom salt
which is available at
the Fire Department.
d. Fill bowl at base of tree with
solution; replenish as neces-
sary.
The solution should last from
eight to ten days. Not only will
the solution fireproof your tree,
but it will help preserve and keep
the needles on the tree until after
the holidays.
Enjoy Christmas 1978 the safe
and merry way! Merry Christmas
Keflavik!
Officer training tops AF n
Deadline nears
Air Force captains have only
until Jan. 1, 1979 to apply for the
FY 80 Air Staff Training (ASTRA)
program.
Those with total active federal
commissioned service dates in 1973
and 1974 are eligible.
Completion of squadron officers
school, in residence or by corres-
pondence, is a mandatory prerequi-
site. Rated officers must have
completed at least three years of
flying duty since flying training,
and all officers must have three or
more years of duty since graduating
from any Air Force Institute of
Technology-sponsored training.
If serving in the continental
United States, applicants must have
completed at least one year on sta-
tion as of the Jan. 1 deadline. If
overseas, they must have a return
date between Oct. 1, 1979 and
Sept. 30, 1980
FY 80 ASTRA program selectees
will incur a two-year service com-
mitment.
The ASTRA program is designed to
develope future Air Force managers
anr planners by stimulating early
career growth of promising young
officers through exposure to the
complexities of the policy and
decision-making process. Emphasis
is placed on active participation in
current Air Staff projects and
long-range planning.
Safety aids for
Due to icy sidewalks and entran-
ce ways to buildings, many injuries
to Naval Station Personnel are ex-
perienced during the winter months.
All efforts to reduce or eliminate
the injuries must be administered.
To help in this effort, salt and
sand is available at the wash rack,
building //507, free of charge.
Tools to break up the ice can be
ordered through Supply, such as ship
scrapers which could prove effective
winter
for scraping away the ice. Stock
number for this tool is 5110-00-224-
9926 and it’s cost is $16. Another
tool is a sidewalk scraper locally
procurred from McMasters, at the
cost of $7.77.
It is recommended that either
type tool be procured and used along
with the salt/sand available on the
station, in protection of human re-
sources and prevention of injury to
personnel.

Rolled sleeves allowed
Authorization to wear fatigue
shirts with the sleeves rolled up
has been approved in concept and
will soon begin up-dating AFR
32-10 to reflect the change, of-
ficials announced.
At the same time, Air Force Uni-
Board officials said a suggestion
to eliminate wear of the fatigue
shirt with sleeves cut off was de-
ferred. Members are reminded,
however, that if they do choose to
wear fatigues with cut-off sleeves,
they must also possess two long
sleeve shirts in accordance with
AFR 35-10.
Retraining possibilities
An existing personnel shortage
and planned authorization increases
in the explosive ordance disposal
(EOD) career field (AFSC 464X0)
have created retraining possibili-
ties for some people in three muni-
tions specialties.
If they meet group and grade
criteria, personnel in munitions
systems (461X0), aircraft armament
systems (462X0) and nuclear weap-
ons (463X0) fields can apply for
retraining into the F.OD specialty.
Generally, officials are seeking
E-7s and E-8s for the EOD jobs, but
some lower grade exceptions may be
possible.
