Champus benefit expanded
16,834 Airmen re-up
RANDOLPH AFB, TEXAS (AFNS)— The
Air Force has exceeded its career
force entry objective of 15,500 for
fiscal year 1979 with 16,834 air-
man entering their second term of
enlistment.
This includes 15,918 first-term
reenlistment and 916 airman with
prior service in the three to seven
year group who reentered the active
force.
An expansion of Computerized
Axial Tomography scanning (CAT),
coverage for CHAMPUS beneficiaries
will be implemented in early 1980,
according to DoD health officials.
The proposed change in CHAMPUS
policy for CAT Scan procedures was
announced in the Federal Register in
late October and will be implemented
as a formal change in CHAMPUS. policy
following consideration of solicited
public comments which are now under
review. The proposed change in
CHAMPUS policy would authorize whole
body scans and set new guidlines for
determining quality of care and med-
ical necessity associated with CAT
Scan services.
CAT scanning is a form of com-
puter assisted radiation photography
developed in recent years which per-
mits viewing of soft tissue in the
body in a manner similar to x-ray
photography of the body's bone
structure. CAT scans were orig-
inally used principally for exam-
ination of the brain. Whole body
scans are a more recent development.
Among the advantages of CAT scanning
are the elimination of possible
dangers to the patient associated
with dye testing and x-ray pro-
cedures .
Current CHAMPUS policy limits
coverage to head scans and limits
the type of authorized medical care
facility at which CAT scan may be
obtained.
Upon implementation of the ex-
panded CAT scan policy, it will be
made retroactively effective to
October 1, 1978, CHAMPUS officials
said.
Personnel officials said the ob-
jective was achieved due to measure
such as lump-sum payment of selec-
tive reenlistment bonuses, enhance-
ment of the Career Airman Reenlist-
ment Reservation System, reestab-
lish of the delayed reenlistment
program and the hard work of com-
manders, supervisors and career
counselors.
