Time for Americans to know about Blackdeeds
b:
During this nonth the U. S. Navy
ill join all Americans in observing
Black History month. "Heritage For
America" is this year's theme.
Secretary of the Navy, Edward
Hidalgo, has told Navy members that
this month-long observance will be
more than a review of the story of
blacks struggling from slavery to
their rightful places in American
society. It is a time for all
Americans to become more aware of
individual deeds and achievements of
blacks. Many blacks have played
central roles in our country's de-
velopment and defense.
A noted black who has signifi-
cantly contributed his "Heritage For
America" is Hr. Alvin H. Murphy, a
guided missiles and space special-
ist. He was born in Boston, Massa-
chusetts. Earning honors in
mathematics and physics, he gradu-
ated from Mt. St. Charles Academy,
Woonsocket, Rhode Island.
After graduating from the Catho-
lic University of America, Washing-
ton, D. C. in 1951, A. H. Murphy
went to work for a major aircraft
corporation in California as a Ju-
nior Engineering Draftsman B. He
was assigned to the Constellation
laison group making drawing revi-
sions of the various airplane models
being built in the factory. Next,
he was assigned to the YC-130 Her-
cules transport project where he
helped design the engine mounting,
associated accessories, interior
configurations and other equipment.
For a while Mr. Murphy worked for
a U. S. Naval Ordnance laboratory,
where he designed components for
various underwater exploding mines.
At another laboratory branch, he de-
signed warhead configurations and
components for various guided
missiles such as Terrier, Talos and
Sparrow.
He was First Senior Design Engi-
neer with a missiles and space com-
pany. Mr. Murphy was in charge of a
group of engineers and draftsmen
where research and development pro-
jects were converted into a produc-
tion hardware, including such items
as the Polaris telemetry system, the
Agenda Orbital Programmer and Solar
Array programs.
His many achievements both past
and present are too numerous to in-
clude. But Mr. Alvin Hugh Murphy
has contributed his permanent, un-
precedented advancements in space
technology to make America better.
