Parker leads VP-23 over
57th FIS for Base Basketball crown
Leon Parker's 17 points paced the
VP-23 Seahawks to the Base Basket-
ball Championship as they defeated
the 57th FIS Black Knights, 40-30,
in a game played Wednesday night at
the Base Gymnasium.
The Black Knights who captured the
title last year, came out of the
blocks quickly in the first half and
held a six point lead with 9:01 to
play in the half. That lead did not
last long, however, as Parker and
Brian Higgins combined for three
consecutive field goals and pulled
the Seahawk6 to a 17-17 tie with
1:05 to play. Then with one second
remaining, Wiggins made one of two
free throws to give the Seahawks
a one-point edge at the intermis-
sion.
The teams traded off field goals
for the first few minutes of the
second stanza but the Seahawks put
together eight straight points and
led 34-25 with 6:15 remaining in the
game. From that point on the Black
Knights only managed five points
while the Seahawks connected for
nine more and went on to an 11 point
victory.
Parker's 17 points led all
scorers and his teammates Mike Riso
and Steve Tarquinlo scored seven 3nd
six respectively. The Seahawks.,
who were coached by Sherman Knight,
committed only one turnover and pul-
led down 12 rebounds.
The Black Nignts were led by Rex
Dial who scored 10 points in the
first half and ended the game with
12. Richard Bozeman was next with
seven points and Gary Bailey and
Dave Ehlers added four each for the
Black Knights. The Black Knights were
coached by Homer Hurd. They com-
mitted five turnovers and cleared
the boards 13 times during the game.
