Smith, NRK tune up to defend titlein
upcoming base championship rolloffs
Dan Smith of CommSta NRK put on a
bowling clinic Monday night as his
team won four from Air Ops by for-
feit in the North Atlantic League of
intramural bowling. Smith fired a
blazing 678 series, which included a
near perfect 278 game as well as a
215. Doug Drewry followed Smith
with a 211 game and 572 set.
NRK has already wrapped up a spot
in the base championship roll offs
which are scheduled to begin March
17.
Club Management joins NRK as the
other representative from the North
Atlantic League. They have a lock
on second place even though they on-
ly split their match with the Black
Knights. Cesar Domingo led Manage-
ment with a 561 set and Edgardo Lay-
ug came in with a 535. Bob Shaffer
was high for the Knights with a 524,
Dud Hueber had a 519 and Harris Hut-
to a 502.
The top two teams from each of
the four intramural leagues will
square off in a nine-game roll off
for the base championship.
Five of the eight teams have al-
ready been decided. Joining the
North Atlantic League representa-
tives will be the 960th AWACSS from
the American League, Medical from
the National and Specomm from the
International.
Second place is up for grabs in
those leagues. In the American,
Food Service holds a game and a half
advantage over AFI and the 57th FIS
with one week of bowling remaining.
AFI is in second place in the Na-
tional with CommSta Admin and the
57th FIS Good Guys two games back
and the IDF Chiefs four back with
two weeks remaining. In the Inter-
national, if Det. 14 wins one point
from Specomm in their match they are
in. But if Det. 14 drops all four
points and AFI wins four, there will
have to be a roll off to decide the
winner.
Rounding out the remaining action
in Monday night's North Atlantic
play, Supply #3 won four from the
Marines by forfeit, CFK downed Pub-
lic Works for three behind EdSibel's
233 and 563 and Jim Fales' 508.
Nick Nicholson led PWC with a 201
and 540. AIMD won three from IsCom-
Ice, despite a 202 and 526 by IsCom-
Ice's Dennis Lewey.
In the American League,. AFI kept
their playoff hopes alive by downing
league-leading AWACSS for three.
Bruce Michaelson's 215 and 202 game
and 596 set led the way with Jim
Kearney following with a 211 and 583
and Paul Pietruszewski rolling a
508. Mike Luce led the 960th with
a 542, Ed Jones had a 536, Joe Mor-
owski a 513 and John Wright a 206
and 511.
AIMD didn't help Food Services
out when they came away with a split
of their match. Joyce Fisher led
AIMD with a 514 while Jack Roberts
was high for Food Service with a 550
and Danny Nigdao added a 505.
In other action, Phil Blauvelt
rolled a 202 and 555 and Steve Brown
had a 506 as NavFac bested IDF for
three. Mike Harpley's 215 and 589
and Gary Carmichael's 509 led VP-23
to a 3-1 decision over Comptroller.
W.C. York was high for the losers
with a 518. Don Phelps rolled a 211
and 573 to lead Navy Broadcasting to
a 3-1 win over NavCommSta. Steve
Roselli had a 514 for CommSta. Jim
Barroso's 510 and Tony Cuerpo's 508
off set Jim Barriniau's 513 as the
Commissary and the 57th ended the
evening in a draw.
In the International League',
Specomm won two and a half from'Ad-
min behind George Letke’s 212 and
518 and Frank Caille’s 512. Jim
Kyne's 204 and 533 led Det. 14 to a
shutout win over the 960th AWACSS.
Tim Auerbach was high for the 960th
with a 203 and 546 and Bernard Mit-
chell had a 206 game. Public Works
downed Navy Weather for three with
Pete Corrigan rolling a 502 for Wea-
ther. NSGA's Mat Rats tripped the
Marines for three and the Hot Rocks,
also from NSGA, blanked NavFac.
Scott Metzger had a 510 set and
earned himself a triplicate patch
with three 170 games. Mike Stasiak
was high for the Rocks with a 523.
AFI and Grindavik split their match.
Chuck Parker led AFI with a 214 game
and 590 set, Art Kane had a 527 and
Chuck Gray earned an all spare game
patch.
In the National League, Medical
was a 3-1 winner over Dental. Walt
Milnichuk was high for Medical with
a 531 and Fred Urban led Dental with
a 202 and 504. Joe McGlynn had a
208 and 570, Ellie Mahayag added a
214 and 543 and Lou Dixon had a 508
as the Supply Chiefs shutout CommSta
Admin. Pauline Parker shot a 518 as
the Navy Exchange blanked the CFK
Chiefs. Van Sullivan was high for
CFK with a 510. The 57th FIS Good
Guys won four from the IDF Chiefs
behind Bob Dixon's 560 while Perry
Boren led IDF with a 505. AFI
downed Recreation for three behind
George Kellerman's 508 and Frank
Krocka's 506. Bert Quintans was
high for Rec with a 516. ComFairKef
bested Supply #2 for three in the
other match.
Luce and Dugan top
no tap bowling tourney
Mike Luce and Willa Dugan won the
no tap bowling tournament held last
weekend at the Arctic Lanes.
Luce topped the men's bracke
with a 729 and Dugan led the ladie
with a 682.
Linda Patrizi finished second in
the women's division with a 661.
Millie Fahland was third at 658 and
Vera Luce and Toy Rogers tied for
fourth with 652.
Doug Drewry finished second on
the men's side with 726, three pins
off the pace. Joe McGlynn was third
at 699, Dan Smith (696) was fourth
and Tom Andrews' 694 was good enough
for fifth.
The remaining winners and their
scores were: Walt Myros, 688; Scott
Metzger, 684; Alan Burke, 669; Chuck
Stegall, 664; Mark Blagen, 654; Phil
Blauvelt, 653; Rob Belieu, 643; Dale
Peters, 642; and Dale Cook, 641.
Shaffer remains 'King’j
Luce crowned Queen
Bob Shaffer retained his title
last week as King of the Hill while
Vera Luce was crowned the new Queen.
Shaffer bested Bob Bruening in the
final match to keep his crown, but
Bruening proved to be the big win-
ner. Bruening strung six strikes in
a row during the qualifying round
and won the jackpot, the first time
it has been broken in over three
months. Luce downed Debbie Jones i:
the women’s final.
King and Queen of the Hill compe-
tition is held each weekend at noon
at the Arctic Lanes.
