Volume 23, Number 12 March 28, 1980 News briefs Summer mail schedule The new U. S. mail summer flight schedule is in effect com- mencing Tuesday. Mail will be de- livered to the NATO base Keflavik on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The mail will be dispatched to New York on Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. This schedule will re- main in effect until October 31, and at which time a new schedule will be announced. Rotator changes to Thursday The Military Airlift Command is currently implementing a C-141 "Stretch" modification program. There will be a shortage of avail- able C-141 aircraft until this program is completed. Therefore, this aircraft short- age necessiates a change in the rotator schedule to Thursday vice Wednesday. The flight times of the current schedule will remain " as is. Port call dates for May and June will be as follows: hay 8, 15, 22, and 29; June 5, 12, 19, and 26. At this time, no schedule for July and August has been promul- gated by Headquarters, Military Airlift Command. However, assume the new Thursday rotator to remain in effect until further notice. AFAS expands loan program RANDOLPH AFB, Texas (AFNS)—The Air Force Aid Society has expand- ed its educational loan program to Include members of the selected reserve. The program includes the Gen- eral George S. Brown Senior Stu- dent Loan Program for members and their spouses and the General Henry H. Arnold Student Loan Pro- gram for children of these mem- bers. Applicants must be U. S. citi- zens and enrolled or accepted for enrollemnt in a school qualified by the U. S. Office of Education. Assistance is provided for vo- cational , undergraduate and grad- uate studies. Students may borrow up to $7,500 for undergraduate study, $15,000 for graduate study, or a maximum combination of k$15,000 at 7 percent interest. ■Repayment begins 10 months after fgraduation or termination of stud- I les. Bautista selected as Sailor of the Year Signalman First Class Leonard C. Bautista is the Sailor of the Year for Naval Station Keflavik and for Commander, Fleet Air Keflavik. He has served in the U. S. Navy, with the exception of nine months, since 1964. SMI Bautista's awards and com- mendations are: Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Mer- itorious Unit Commendation, Navy Marksman Medal, Good Conduct Award and a Letter of Appreciation. Petty Officer Bautista has upheld the Highest traditions of the Naval Ser- vice. Petty Officer Bautista works with the Naval Station Security Depart- ment. He was selected from among five nominees for Naval Station's Sailor of the Year, and a few days later he was picked Sailor of the Year for Commander, Fleet Air Kefla- vik. He has been engaged in several community related activities during the time he has been assigned to the Naval Station. He is an active mem- ber of the Arctic Sportsman Club, and helped to found the Fly Fisher- man 's Club. SMI Bautista is also actively en- gaged in ecological preservation ef- forts under the sponsorship of the local sportsman activities. His participation in those efforts re- quire him to take several trips throughout Iceland. Through his in- volvement in ecological preserva- tion, he has become familiar with many local nationals and has been invited the last two years to help start and stock a new fish hatchery near Akureyri. Petty Officer Bau- tista also teaches fly tying, and fly casting for local clubs. He is presently in competition as a nominee for Naval Air Atlantic Sailor of the Year in the shore com- mand category. SMI Bautista is married to the former Theresa M. Britton. PETTY OFFICER BAUTISTA CONSULTS----with Lt. Cmdr. James S. Taylor, Security Officer of the Naval Station, about some routine security casework which requires immediate attention.
