960th cl ham ips in rolloff
The American League's 960th
AWACSS won the base intramural bowl-
ing championship last week with a
decisive victory over the seven oth-
er teams entered.
The championships pitted the top
two teams from the four intramural
leagues in a nine game roll off with
total pins deciding the winner.
AWACSS led by only 16 pin9 after
the first three games, but widened
the margin to 143 after six games
and ended up with a 223 pin bulge
over the American League's AFI en-
try, which finished second.
The 960th put on quite a bowling
clinic as every series during the
match was above 500.
Mike Luce had the hot hand, aver-
aging 192 over the nine games. Ed
Jones went into the roll off with a
174 average and upped that to 185
during the championship.
After the second day, the race
for first was virtually over and the
battle shaped up for second place.
Going into the final three games,
AFI was ahead of Club Management by
50 pins, but that evaporated in the
first game and Management moved into
second by 24 sticks. But AFI was
equal to the challenge, came back
and shot a 1,014 gams to Manage-
ment's 945. This put AFI in the
lead by 45 pins going into the last
game. It was only five pins in
reality though as there was 40 pins
difference in the team's handicaps.
During the third game the lead
changed hands several times and the
bowlers were well aware of what the
other team was doing. By the fifth
frame in the last game AFI was down
by nearly 40 pins. AFI started
trimming the deficit in the sixth
whan Bruce Mlchaslson began his
four-bagger. But the deciding frame
was the ninth as far as Management
was concerned. In their ninth they
didn't get a mark at all while AFI
hauled in four to go up by about 30
pins. The teams finished the last
frame nearly even but the damage had
been dona one frame earlier.
The first day AWACSS broke on top
in the third game by shooting a.
1,018 game. It staked them to a 16
pin lead over Club Management. AFI
at that point was sitting in sixth
place 123 pins off the pace.
Mike Luce led AWACSS' first day
assault (2875) with games of 208 and
206 and e 506 series. Steve Wheelat
