"Sloe Gin 02" was scrambled on an active air defense mission from the squadron alert facility, however a mechanical difficulty forced the crew to abort the mission while in position for take off on the runway. The crew taxied back to the alert facility and shut the defective air- craft down, proceeded to a spare aircraft, and became airborne in on- ly eight minutes from the time of their abort. Thirteen minutes had elapsed since the original scramble order had been received. Capt. Don Snelgrove, the F-4 Air- craft Commander of Sloe Gin 02 cred- ited his rapid aircraft change and re-launch to the members of the maintenance alert force on duty. "Those guys were fantastic. As soon as they saw us taxiing back, they started getting the other aircraft ready to go," said the captain, "I Ground crew different 57th FIS
