"Discovering Iceland
Most Americans are interested in
finding out more about this "Land of
Fire and Ice" but are unsure exactly
how to go about it. If you are one,
then "Discovering Iceland" has been
tailor-made for you.
"Discovering Iceland" is a series
of lectures, films, and slide shows
offered by the Naval Station Library
during this week, National Library
Week, commencing Sunday. It is
designed to take you beyond what you
learned in the orientation lectures
or what you may casually observe.
The speakers will introduce you
to many facets of the land and peo-
ple. The library has scheduled the
following programs with no admission
charge: On Sunday Babs Sigurjonsson
will speak on "The Real Life in Ice-
land." A native of Scotland who has
lived in Iceland for more than 20
years, she is now the host nation
teacher at A. T. Mahan Elementary
School. She will not only focus on
Icelandic customs and experiences of
everyday life, but also relate some
interesting and humorous stories a-
bout her adjustment to her new home.
On Monday Thor Halldorsson will
use slides in his talk on "How Ice-
land Began and How to See it." This
will be a mini-tour of some major
points of interest and some of the
beautiful scenery. Old-timers will
appreciate explanations of geologi-
cal formations: How did the unique
landscape come to be?
GOING FOR FOUR—J02 Kevin P. Clarke and Ensign Glendon M. King take time
out for a photograph during Clarke's reenlistment ceremony last Friday.
Petty Officer Clarke signed on for another four years under the Guard III
program and will be going to Albany, N. Y., for duty in recruiting sup-
port. Ensign King, Officer in Charge of Navy Broadcasting Service Detach-
ment Eight, administered the oath of enlistment. (Photo by PHAN Kevin

On Tuesday Mik Magnusson wi
speak on "Is Iceland Part of the
Twentieth Century?" This lecture,
accompanied by slides, should help
us gain a better understanding of
the Icelanders by pointing out the
events that have shaped their atti-
tudes.
On Wednesday, you may have heard
of the Icelandic sagas or even read
some of these legends, but there is
magic in listening while a story-
teller spins out the tale for you.
Thor Halldorsson tells selected por-
tions of sagas and some more recent
Icelandic folk tales.
On Thursday Sveinn Eiriksson
shows an award-winning film on the
Westmann Islands. The film not only
includes footage of the recent vol-
canic eruption and the evacuation of
residents, but is also exciting be-
cause of its artistic quality.
"Discovering Iceland" is being
held in observance of National Li-
brary Week. During this week, the
role of libraries as depositories of
information on all subjects and as a
source of good recreational reading
is recognized nationwide.
Each program will begin at 8 p.m.
in the library.
