"Discovering Iceland”
Each night during National Lib-
rary week a crowd packed the Station
Library to enjoy the "Discovering
Iceland" programs. Total attendance
was over 350.
A broad range of subjects was
covered, but most people will remem-
ber the details, such as how Ice-
landic campers cooked eggs in their
socks by dipping them into hot
streams, or how it feels to see mol-
ten lava inch down a street in a de-
serted town.
The response of those who attend-
ed was overwhelmingly positive. Af-
ter the formal program and question
time ended each night, the speaker
was surrounded by people with still
more questions and comments. One
patron called the programs "the cul-
tural event of the year" on base.
Interest in the library's Icelandic
section has shown a marked increase.

The unpredictable effects of
inflation preclude the continued
use of standard taxi fares on the
Agreed Area. In the near future
taxis aboard tile NATO Base will be
exclusively using the meter sys-
tem. The article on nage five ex-
plains this system. Taxi service
is a convenience available to you,
and to avoid confusion concerning
its costs you should thoroughly
familiarize yourself with the sys-
tem.
