Three personnel retire with 72 years
The completion of three careers
totaling 72 years service in the
United States Air Force was celebra-
ted recently in retirement ceremo-
nies held by the 57th Fighter Inter-
ceptor Squadron (FIS).
The three retirees were: Senior
Master Sgt. Henry Parker, Master
Sgt. Paul McLard, and Tech. S^t.
Ronald Tharpe.
_ach retiree received a citation
to accompany their retirement orders
from Col. Paul D. Wagoner, Commander
Air Force Iceland. Also Col.
Wagoner presented certificates of
appreciation from the Air Force to
the wives of the retirees for the
support they gave their husbands
throughout their Air Force careers.
Senior Master Sgt. Henry Parker
enlisted in the Air Force in 1954 at
Sampson Air Force Base, New York
originally serving as a helicopter
mechanic.
Senior Master Sgt. Parker has won
such outstanding awards as Outstand-
ing Airman of the Year in 1971 with
the 63rd Air Base Group, Norton Air

During Det. 14's recently held
Commander's Call, two medals and a
suggestion award were presented.
Air Force Commendation Medals were
presented to Staff Sgt. Michael L.
Wheeler and Senior Airman Robert A.
Pederson.
Sgt. William F. Orsborn received
a certificate of recognition and $50
cash award for a suggestion he sub-

ient at Edwards Air Force Base,

Staff Sgt. Wheeler distinguished
himself by meritorious service as
the HH-53 Swing Shift Supervisor,

During this period, Sgt. Wheel-
er's outstanding professional skill,
knowledge, and leadership aided im-
measurably in identifying managerial
actions that, when implemented, led
to significant improvements in the
operational effectiveness of the
HH-53 section.
Senior Airman Pederson received
an Air Force Commendation Medal for
his outstanding performance as an
Apprentice CH-3 Helicopter Mechanic,
at the 1st Special Operations Wing,
Hurlburt Field, Fla.
SrA Pederson’s outstanding pro-
fessional skill and dedication were
highly instrumental in the success-
ful execution of the Joint Counter-
ing Attack Helicopter Program.

Norton Air Force Base, Calif., and
had the Best On-The-Job Program in
the Air Force (Air Force/IG) in
1966.
Besides working as a training
noncommissioned officer, he has per-
formed maintenance on 24 different
aircraft. Senior Master Sgt. Parker
and his wife, Pauline, have five
children and plan on retiring in
Hawaii.
Master Sgt. Paul McLard enlisted
in the Air Force in November 1957 at
St. Louis, Mo. He worked as an air-
craft electrician from 1957 until
1974 when he cross trained into
training management.
His other overseas bases include
Okinawa, the Republic of Korea, and
Scotland. He has served as an air-
crew member on these aircraft:
B-47, KC-97, C-123, and EC-121. He
has worked as an aircraft electri-
cian on 33 different aircraft.
Master Sgt. McLard and his wife,
Hazel, have two children. They plan
to live somewhere on the east coast
in the states.
Tech. Sgt. Ronald Tharpe enlisted
in the Air Force in August 1957 at
Beckley, W. Va. He served as a
transportation specialist for si:
years before cross training int
munitions.
His overseas assignments included
the German Federal Republic, Guam,
and Thailand. Tech. Sgt. Tharpe and
his wife, Roberta, were married in
September 1968 in Ohio. They plan
to go to Canton, Ohio with their two
children.
Yonkers is AFI's top operator
Airman John M. Yonkers has been
selected as Air Forces Iceland (AFI)
Switchboard Operator of the Quarter
for February - May.
He is assigned to Operating Loca-
tion Bravo, Det-4, Rockville Naval
Installation. During his tenure at
Rockville, he has been assigned the
duties of Shift Supervisor for Bravo
crew. His primary task was the mon-
itoring and controlling of the NORAD
SAGE Autovon Network Voice Communi-
cations Systems.
His numerous military attributes
have contributed immeasurably to the
efficiency and mission accomplish-
ments of Air Forces Iceland and Air
Force Communicatic..c Command. Air-
man Yonkers was selected for his
constant superior performance and
total dedication to the mission ac-
complishments of the NATO Forces.^^^^
