Tomasson receives civilian award
Mr. Gunnar Tomasson was recently
presented with the third highest a-
award that may be awarded to a civi-
lian who works for the TJ.S. Navy.
The award is the Navy Meritorious
Civilian Serv' ce Award which was
presented to Mr. Tomasson by Captain
T. J. Keene, Commanding Officer, Na-
val Station at the Officers' Club.
The award was for outstanding
meritorious service while serving as
Engineering Division Director, Pub-
lic Works Department, TJ.S. Naval
Station, from November 1978 to Feb-
ruary 1980.
Mr. Tomasson was a principal par-
ticipant in the development of the
geothermal venture which will result
in changing the current method of
heating aboard Naval Station from
the burning of diesel fuel oil to
that generated by a renewable re
source, geothermal heat from the
earth. He has been a key player in
the development of the concept and
bringing it to reality.
Mr. Tomasson manages an engineer-
ing division consisting of seventeen
persons. He has expertly molded an
outstanding engineering division.
The capabilities and talents of the
engineering division are inexhausti-
ble.
Additionally, he was a key parti-
cipant in the recently developed
Master Plan for the Agreed Area and
worked closely with the communities
of the Reykjanes Peninsula to ensure
that the Defense Force Master Plan
was in consonance with the plans of
the surrounding communities and the
Government of Iceland.
Mr. Tomasson has proved himself
to be a brillant and innovative man-
ager engineer of extraordinary value
to the Naval Station and the Defense
Force. He is a tireless worker who
consistently strives for and a-
chieves excellence in all areas.

If so, The Air Force Institute of
Technology offers these opportuni-
ties through the Education With In-
dustry Program (EWI). Jointly spon-
sored by the Air Force and industry,
EWI is designed to develop effective
management abilities and profession-
al competence among participating
mid-caree ''cers.
Captains and Majors are assigned
to leading industrial firms and oth-
er civilian organizations throughout
the United States. They serve in
mid-level administrative or techni-
cal management trainee capacities.
For 10 months these officers are
assigned to one of nearly 70 differ-
ent civilian companies. Partici-
pants wear civilian clothes and work
side-by-side their counterpart in
industry to achieve the host com-
pany's objectives.
In turn, the student receives
knowledge that can be applied to
their Air Force specialty. Selec-
tion for the class that starts in
September 1981 will be made by the
AFIT Selection Board during the Fall
of 1980.

ew AAFES 1981 catalog will be ready on July 7 at NEX•
July 7th will mark a milestone in
catalog shopping for members of the
U. S. Armed Forces, their dependents
and other authorized customers a-
round the world. That's the date
the initial distribution of the new
"Exchange Catalog '81" will begin.
There will now be one catalog pro-
gram serving all military communit-
ies.
The new catalog will offer more
items than either of its predeces-
sors. Added for the first time are
articles of military uniform and ac-

recently announced establishment of
a reenlistment award to recognize
service rendered by mid-career petty
officers and more senior personnel
eligible for Fleet Reserve Transfer.

The award, a bronze Navy Bicen-
tennial Medallion embedded in lu-
cite, is an expression of the Navy's
ppreciation for the contributions
'of the reenlisting petty officer and
the continuing commitment that per-
son Is maxing by electing to remain
in the service.
Members reenlisting for at least
two years, on or after June 1, 1980,
and who meet the following criteria,
are eligible for this new award:
1. Reenlistment prior to completing
12 years total active service for a
term during which 12 years active
service will be completed or;
2. Reenlistment after attaining eli-
gibility for transfer to the Fleet
Reserve.

The catalog will be issued in two
editions, one for CONUS arid one for
overseas, as some Congressional re-
strictions prohibit the sale of cer-
tain items in the United States.
CONUS customers will receive their
merchandise from one of 40 manu-
facturers who will ship directly, or
from AAFES warehouse in Atlanta, Ga.
Overseas patrons may get their
orders from warehouses in Thailand,
the Republic of Korea, the Republic
of the Philippines, England and
the German Federal Republic in addi-
tion to U. S. A. sources.
