Park is in planning stages
The tuouosed NATO Base Park is in
the initial planning stages. This
is a very big community project
which will be an exciting addition
to both our social and work lives.
The Park Planning Committee is
still forming; there is room for and
a need for more people who are in-
terested in planning the park. If
you are looking forward to seeing
this project get underway, please
consider joining our planning ses-
sions, 7:30 at the Community Center,
Monday evenings.
Our park will be located behind
the Mini-Mart within the "C" shaped,
earthen-ringed area. A number of
barracks overlood the proposed park
site; providing many residents with
the opportunity to watch progress
and enjoy the completed park from
their "view" rooms.
We will soon progress to the
working stages of this project,
which will provide lots of outdoor
activity for anyone who wants it.
We hope to create many interesting
areas by the careful placement of
rocks and soil, how banks of rock
will be used to retain soil on vary-
ing levels.
Placement of the smaller rocks
will be done by hand. Plan to help
by placing a rock (two or three,
etc.) in the park.
This is an all volunteer project
open to anyone and everyone. It’s
here for our enjoyment. Get invol-
ved and enjoy yourself. Call 7261
for more information.
School opening
days are announced
The coming school year will have
different starting times for the A.
T. Mahan Elementary and High
Schools.
Students attending the high
school will begin their first day of
class Monday August 25. Elementary
students will start a week later
Tuesday, September 2, because the
elementary staff will be participat-
ing in a week long workshop.
New families should continue to
register their children in both the
elementary and high schools. The
school offices will be open through-
out the summer.
Tour is offered
This tour will take you through
Reykjavik to Thingvellir, the an-
cient site of the Icelandic Althing,
which is the oldest legislative bod-
y in the world still in existence.
The tour then continues eastward
to Geysir. Geysir is the most fa-
mous of all spouting hot springs in
the world, giving its name to all
others. It was inactive until 1974
when it gave a few good perform-
ances. Although Geysir is unrelia-
ble, other nearby hot springs spout
regularly.
From Geysir the tour goes to
Gullfoss (The Golden Waterfall)
which falls in cascades into a deep
canyon in the Hvita (White River).
Gullfoss is considered to be one of
the most beautiful waterfalls in
Europe.
The tour returns to Keflavik at 7
p.m. Saturday evening. The tour is
Saturday, July 12 and will depart
9 a.m. in front of Viking Mall.
For more information call the
Tour Office at 4420/4200.
