♦AMERICA'S CUP—Speculation in Newport, Rhode Island, has
it that Ted Turner and his yacht "Courageous" will be drop-
ped from America's Cup defender trials soon. "Courageous"
lost two races Sunday to Russell Long's "Clipper." Turner's
yacht has tlje poorest record of the three American entries. "Freedom",
skippered by Dennis Conner, is expected to win the right to defend the cup
next month against the foreign challenger.
♦PRO FOOTBALL—Here's how Wally Martin, UPI's Broadcast Sports Editor,
expects the 28 NFL teams to finish this year: AMERICAN EAST—New England,
Miami, Baltimore, Buffalo and New York. AMERICAN CENTRAL—Houston, Pitts-
burgh, Cleveland and Cincinnati. AMERICAN WEST—San Diego, Denver, Oak-
land, Kansas City and Seattle. NATIONAL EAST—Philadelphia, Washington-,
Dallas, New York and St. Louis. NATIONAL CENTRAL—Chicago, Minnesota,
Tampa Bay, Detroit and Green Bay. NATIONAL WEST—New Orleans, Atlanta,

♦BASEBALL—Gene Mauch, Minnesota Twins Manager, resigned Sunday after
his team was defeated by the Detroit Tigers, 3-2. Mauch was in his fifth
season with the Twins. Before that he managed the Montreal Expos and
Philadelphia Phillies for "a total of 16 seasons.
♦TENNIS—Harold Soloman sefeated Francisco Gonzalez to win the Champion-
ship in the Association of Tennis Professionals tournament in Cincin-
nati. He won 7-6, 6-3. HANA MANDLIKOVA, of Czechoslovakia, beat 15-year-
old Andrea Jaeger Sunday, to take the title in the $100,000 Mahwah, New
Jersey Tennis tournament. She won the match in three sets.
♦GOLF—Tom Watson fired a five-under-par 65 Sunday and easily won the
World Series of Golf held in Akron, Ohio. Watson, who shot rounds of 65
three times during the tournament, finished with a 10-under par 270. The
win made Watson the first golfer ever to win more than $500,000 in one
season. His earnings so far this season are $510,258. Ray Floyd was the
only player to create any excitement in the race to catch Watson. He was
five strokes back with three holes to go and birdied two of those. He
finished two-strokes behind Watson with a 272. PETER JACOBSEN won the
$45,000 first prize Sunday in the Buick-Goodwrench Open in Grand Blanc,
Michigan. He sank a 15-foot putt on the last hole to finish 12-under-par
at 276, one stroke better than Bill Kratzert and Mark Lyle. BETH DANIEL
won the $150,000 Denver Classic Sunday with a 12-under-par 276. Six
strokes back were Jane Blalock and Sandra Post.
♦THEY SAID IT—Bum Phillips, Houston Oiler Coach, when asked if the
acquisition of Oakland Quarterback Kenny Stabler would put the Oilers in
the Super Bowl: "Yep, if we win more games than anybody else." EARL
WEAVER, on umpire Ron Luciano's new career as an NBC Sportscaster: "I
hope he takes this job more seriously than he did his last one." JIM
ZORN, Seattle Seahawks Quarterback, whose wife Joy is expecting their
first child: "If it's a boy, my neighbors have some friends who want me
to name him Bjorn, so the headlines could read, BJORN ZORN BORN. MERV
RETTENMUND, California Coach, on weak-throwing Don Baylor: "He's the guts
of the Angels, our triple threat. He can hit, run and lob."
-Local sports happenings-
♦ AROUND THE BASE—There will be an IDF Friendship Golf Tournament tomor-
row beginning at 8 a.m. There is an entry fee for the tournament and it
can be paid at the golf course. A banquet will follow the tournament at
the Officer's Club. THE FALL RUN-OFF will be held this Monday at the Base
Gym. There will be a men's, women's and Master's event for 10,000 meters
and two-mile run-offs. A small entry fee is required and registrations
are currently being taken at the gym. ANOTHER RACQUETBALL TOURNAMENT will
be held tomorrow and Sunday at the Base Gym. This tournament will feature
Men's Class 'A' and Open events. A SUNDAY MORNING MEN'S CLASSIC BOWLING
LEAGUE is being formed. The league needs teams and individuals in order
to get started. There will be an organizational meeting on Sept. 7 at 11
a.m. at the Arctic Lanes. For more information about this new league
