★PRO BASKETBALL—Pistol Pete Maravich's father and former coach of
Louisiana State, Press Maravich, confirmed recently that the Pistol had
"lost his enthusiasm" for basketball and decided to call it quits. The
NBA, however, said it was unaware of Maravich's plans to retire from the
Boston Celtics. Maravich is college basketball's all-time leading scorer.
His lifelong dream to play on an NBA championship team was never realized
during his 10 years in the pro ranks.
★AUTO RACING—Bobby Allison won Sunday's 250-mile Nascar Race at the
North Wilkesboro, North Carolina Speedway, despite slick track conditions
that held his winning speed to a slow average of 75.51 miles per hour.
Allison, driving a Ford Thunderbird, stole the lead from eventual runner-
up Darrell Waltrip with 19 laps to go. Dave Marcis wound up third, fol-
lowed by Harry Gant and Dale Earnhardt. There were eight caution flags
with 114 of the 400 laps run under the yellow flag.
★TENNIS—Andrea Jaeger took advantage of erratic play and poor serving
by Hana Mandlikova, and beat the Czechoslovakian in three sets for the
first time in four meetings to win the $200,000 Riveria Women's Tennis
Classic. It was the second pro tournament win for Jaeger, a 15-year-old
high school student from Illinois. She took home $34,000 for her first
place finish.
★GOLF—Lee Trevino's 25-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole gave him a
15-under par and a one-stroke margin over Terry Diehl as he captured his
first Texas Open Golf Tournament in San Antonio. Besides the $45,000
for first place, Trevino also took home the coveted Vardon Trophy, for his
69.73 stroke average, the lowest of the year. DONNA CAPONI YOUNG added
$15,000 to her bank account by capturing an LPGA tournament in Overland
Park, Kansas. Young became only the second woman in the tour's history to
win $200,000 in a single season.
★THEY SAID IT—Tommy Canterbury, Centenary Basketball coach; "The
trouble with officials is they just don't care who wins." WAYNE BOULTING-
HOUSE, the Basketball Coach at Indiana State-Evansville, on the advantage
of having 7'6 and a half center John Hollinden: "Just the other day we
were in the Atlanta Airport, and John helped out his teammates by reaching
over the doors of the pay toilets and opening them from the inside."
MICHAEL LOURIE, French National Sprint Coach, asked why his country hasn't
been able to produce great track and field teams the way it produces great
wines: "Perhaps it is precisely because of our great wines that we have
not had a great track team."
