Base student joins Navy,
chooses Aerography career
By SN Janet Willard
Many career fields await today's
high school graduate. Among them
are obtaining a college education,
traveling, heading into the lob mar-
ket and joining the military.
Recently Rochelle Hortz, e. pro-
spective graduate of A. T. Mahan
High School, opted to join the Navy.
She was sworn in during ceremonies
conducted at the Naval Station Com-
mand Post by her father, SKI Alan
Hortz, of the Naval Facility Supply
Department.
Rochelle enlisted under the De-
layed Entry Program and is scheduled
to report to the Naval Recruit
Training Center in Orlando, Florida,
next January. Following recruit
training she will enter "A" School
in the Aerographer's Mate rating.
Rochelle, a native of Philadel-
phia, has traveled to Greece, Israel
and Italy, in addition to traveling
in the U. S. and Canada. While at-
tending the Dependent School in Nea
Maki, Greece, Rochelle had the op-
portunity to graduate from school in
her junior year. However, she chose
to attend A. T. Mahan School an ad-
ditional year in order to obtain
language credits which she feels
will assist her should college plans
materialize.
Why did Rochelle join the Navy?
"I joined because of the educational
benefits and the travel involved,"
she replied. She hopes to travel to
Morocco, Australia or even Antarc-
tica. When asked what she liked
most about Iceland, she replied,
"Iceland has many beautiful areas
and I enjoy cold weather."
A beginner's class in Icelandic
will begin October 16 and end
December 4. The class will be held
in Bldg. T-170 and meet on Thursdays
from 6 to 8 p.m. There is a fee

How does one go about joining the
Navy in Iceland? Rochelle talked
with NCI Tom Milton, the Naval Sta-
tion Career Counselor and PNC Clif-
ford Stevens of the Personnel Sup-
port Detachment. She chose the
Aerographer's rating because she
enjoys science •
Navy enlistee, Rochelle Hortz,
visits the Naval Oceanography De-
tachment, and learns about a weather
map from ACC Jerry Enyeart.
The A. T. Mahan senior enjoys
sewing, reading, hiking and cave
exploring. When asked what her
feelings were concerning recruit
training, she replied, "It will be
an interesting experience for sure."
What about her first duty station?
Rochelle laughed and replied, "Prob-
ably Iceland!"
