Phillies take first game of World Series
A three-run homer by Bake McBride
in the bottom of the third inning
ignited the Philadelphia Phillies
from a four run deficit to a 7-6
victory over the Kansas City Royals
in game one of the World Series,
played Tuesday night.
The game was played before some
65,000 fans who braved AO degree
temperatures at Veterans Stadium in
Philadelphia.
Kansas City batters got to the
Phillies' rookie Pitcher Bob Walk
early in the game, scoring two runs
in the top half of the second and
third innings.
Amos Otis slammed a two-run homer
in the second, and Willie Mays
Aikens duplicated that feat with his
own two-run shot in the third, giv-
ing the Royals a four-run cushion
after two and a half innings.
The Phillies came back for five
runs against K.C. starter Dennis
Leonard in the bottom of the third,
with RBI-producing hits from Bob
Boone and Lonnie Smith, and Mc-
Bride's three-run blast.
Philadelphia added to their lead
in the fourth when Boona connected
for his second RBI safety, scoring
Manny Trillo from third base, for a
6-4 lead.
Reliever Donald Martin replaced
Leonard and gave up the Phillies
final run in the bottom of the fifth
on a Garry Maddox sacrifice fly
which enabled Mike Schmidt to tag-up
and score from third. The Phillies
led 7-4.
Walk had settled down since his
shaky beginning in the early innings
and held the dangerous Royal lineup
in check through the middle innings.
In the eighth, Walk was sent to the
showers, when Willie Mays Aikens,
celebrating his 26th birthday,
smashed his second two-run homer of
the game, pulling the Royals to
within one run, 7-6.
The Phillies called on their ace
of the bullpen, 36-year-old Tug
McGraw, to relieve Walk and protect
their slim lead. And the World
Series veteran (he played with the
New York Mets in their World Series
appearances in '69 and '73) came
through and ended the eighth inning
as John Watham chased a screwball
and hit into a double play.
McGraw beared down in the top of
the ninth and retired Frank White
on a grounder, caught U.L. Washing-
ton looking at a called third strike
and ended the game by striking out
fleet Willie Wilson.
MISC: The Phillies had only one
day off between the playoffs while
the Royals rested for three
days...Bob Walk was the first rookie
pitcher to start the first game of a
World Series in 28 years...It was
the first time in the series' his-
tory that both teams were managed by
rookies.

the Air Force Jet adjacent to Air Forces Iceland headquarters, the Navy Cadets still suffered a 21-
