There is a saying, "The journey
of a thousand miles begins with a
single step." If, indeed, one's
military career is a thousand
miles, then one of the most impor-
tant single steps we can take is
that of being the best at the
job we do. When this step is
recognized, as it was with the fol-
lowing people, perhaps we are well
on our way in the journey.
To be chosen NCO, Airman, Petty
Officer or Sailor of the Quarter re-
quires dedication to duty, versatil-
ity, perseverance and professional-
ism. TSgt. Vaughn E. Miller, Amn.
Kenneth H. Mackley, HM3 Duweena M.
Jordan and PNSN Rebecca L. Morphis
all displayed these qualities, and
were chosen as the outstanding Ice-
land Defense Force Personnel of the
Quarter for the period from July to
September 1980.
NCO of the Quarter
The Air Force Non-Commissioned
Officer of the Quarter, TSgt. Vaughn
Miller, was chosen for his work with
E-3A aircraft. As NCO in charge of
Mission Operations for the 960th
AWACSS, he developed a training pro-
gram for both permanently and tem-
porarily assigned personnel,
ing crewmembers understand the
mission and how they contribute
mission accomplishment. He wor5
directly with other organizations
during air scrambles, pro-
viding detailed knowledge of the
E-3A's capabilities, and serves as
duty NCO when close coordination is
necessary to keep the aircraft in
alert status.
3 Lem-
Airman of the Quarter
As an Air Surveillance Operator
for the 667th ACWS, Airman Kenneth
Mackley was named Airman of the
Quarter because of his outstanding
performance of duties and because he
goes beyond what is expected from
someone of his grade. "He contin-
ually strives to better his capa-
bilities by reading TESTO material,
applicable regulations, manuals and
BOI's, and has assumed the
training of other newly assigned
airmen on the crew, giving them
thorough procedural as well as prac-
tical demonstrations of weather
posting, plotting and scope inter-
pretation," his citation reads. Ac-
cording to SMSgt. Hazen E. Church,
Superintendent of Operations at
Hofn,"Amn. Mackley's military bear-
ing and behavior coupled
show of appearance at all
indicative of his militar
mance."
