I.C.G. helps
Jolly Greens
The Icelandic Coast Guard
assisted Detachment 14 November 11
when they returned the crew of a
downed Jolly Green HH-3E. The
Jolly 15 was returning from a
training mission 20 miles off the
Snaefellsnes peninsula when the
helo experienced engine trouble
and landed on the southern tip of
the peninsula.
The Icelandic Coast Guard was
called upon to assist the stranded
crew since Det. 14's second HH-3E
was grounded. The S-76, on its
first operational mission, brought
the crew back and flew spare parts
to the downed aircraft.
Later at the invitation of Det.
14's Commanding Officer, Lt.Col.
£uce Ware, eight members of the
landic Coast Guard visited De-
hment 14 on the NATO Rase. They
changed ideas concerning various
rescue operations and toured the
detachment's facilities. The Ice-
landers flew their new Sikorsky
S-76 helicopter to the base
facility where they also gave an
orientation helo ride to Det. 14 •
personnel.
The S-76 is the first heli-
copter of its kind to be configured
for a mission of search and rescue.
The helicopter is also the first of
its kind in Iceland and is the
only helicopter owned by the
government capable of traveling to
any point In Iceland without re-
fueling.
