Navy Career Counselor (by NCI R.T. Milton) What is retention? What does it do for me? Well, it affects you and your division, yes, and your whole department and the entire command. Petention is caring, you for your fellow shipmates, your division of- ficer for you and most importantly, you for yourself. Retention is recognition. Yes, recognition, if you have some indi- viduals working for you who do a better job than their peers. Recog- nize them, in words as well as deeds and most of all, be sincere. Don't recognize an individual just because he is there each day. Make your praise important to the recipient. Make each "well done" count or they are meaningless. Retention is getting to know the people who work for you. Yes, get to know your people, their likes, aspirations, desires, families and most of all career intentions. A tall order? Absolutely! However, no one ever said that our job would be easy. Challenging, yes. Easy, no. But I've got 65 people in my division, how can I get to know them all? The obvious answer is you can't. So just give up and ignore every- thing that you have read so far. No that is not the answer. Of course it will be hard. It will require you and the chief to get together with the LPOs and sincerely discuss the make-up of each individual. It will mean meeting with them in your spare time. Taking an interest in your people means giving up time that you don't really have. But, the rewards are great. Unfortunately, the job's not easy. It means, motivating, teach- ing, listening and helping. Once again I ask you, "What is retention?" If your answer is "caring" then you and your division or command is on the right path, be- cause retention is caring. The Navv Career Counselor extension is N.A.V.Y.
