Keflavik's
Volunteer
Harrv Derek
This week’s Keflavik Volunteer is Electronics
Technician 3rd Class Harry E. Derek. He works
at the Naval Communications Station Receiver Site
at Rockville.
Derek is the Drill Officer and Division Officer
of Keflavik Division, U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps
(NSCC). He has been working with the NSCC since
July 1986, when he volunteered to work with the
unit’s drill team. ’When the commanding officer
saw what I could do, he put me to work," Derek
said. "It takes two to four weeks to train a cadet
for the drill team, longer if we have the time.’
In September, Derek, who is 20, received his
appointment as a midshipman in the NSCC. ’That's
when I became Division Officer.’
Derek first worked with a drill team at Recruit
Training Command Great Lakes. He went on to
work with the drill team at his ’A' school,
spending his last six months there as team
captain.
He spends between 10 and 15 hours a week
working with the cadets, who range in age from
11 to 17. "Without this program, a lot of the kids
would be looking for things to do. It keeps me
busy, too."
