BP Shipping Agency Ltd was
founded in Iceland in 1990 to meet
an increasing domestic and
international need for a specialised
ship broker in the global fishing
industry.
The agency’s founder and general mana-
ger is Mr. Björgvin Ólafsson. „Our overall
aim is to analyse our client’s needs and
we strive to supply a buyer with the
vessel he requires at any given time. The
agency therefore provides a range of
services to both domestic and
international clients. These include
consultation on the design and building
of new ships, as well as on buying and
selling existing ships, especially fishing
vessels. We also provide expert
consultation on buying and selling
companies operating in the fishing
industry, and the day to day operation of
fishing vessels,“ says Mr. Ólafsson, add-
ing that BP mostly operates in a global
market. „In about 95% of cases the cli-
ents are international. We’ve handled
sales in over 25 countries and have an
established network of business
contacts in more than 60 countries. It is
therefore safe to say that we almost
entirely operate in the international
market.“
When asked what sets BP apart from
the competition Mr. Ólafsson replies:
„We do our utmost to provide a reliable
long term service. Whether buying or
selling a vessel, this means servicing the
client until the ship is fully in operation.
We’re often providing services, consulta-
tion and information to our clients one or
two years after a vessel is bought or
sold. In the same way, something unex-
pected may come up. This is only
normal in an international business en-
vironment, but at the same time, it is of
vital importance to our clients that they
can count on us from A-Z. Our overall
objective is therefore to make the whole
buying and selling process as effortless
and trouble-free as possible for our cli-
ents.“
At the exhibition, BP Shipping Agency
will be located at stand P 39 where in-
formation on both new and older fishing
vessels will be provided. „We intend to
introduce BP’s services to guests at the
exhibition. Furthermore we will introduce
our joint venture with the Chilean ship-
builder ASMAR, which has in the past
built a number of ships for Icelandic
vessel owners. The venture involves the
construction of a new Purse Seiner bott-
om and pelagic trawler, 82 meters long
and 16 meters wide, with a 8000 bhp
main engine and a freezing capacity of
180 tons per 24 hours. Last but not le-
ast, we will introduce our cooperation
with other ship builders and spare parts
for the fishing industry from MARES,
Germany,“ Mr. Ólafsson concludes.
