to notice how much can be achieved by a
careful study of small and selected sam-
ples, without costly excavations. A require-
ment for such studies is not only chemistry,
but also a background from serious inves-
tigations led by archaeologists. The present
author had taken part in excavations in
Norway over a period of some 10 years
when my studies in Iceland started.
