Þunglyndi er meðal þeirra einkenna PV sem telst til ekki-
hreyfieinkenna. Það hefur veruleg áhrif á lífsgæði sjúklinganna
og því þarf að gefa meiri gaum. Vítahringur myndast stundum
þar einkenni, eins og svefntruflanir, þreyta, verkir og hreyfit-
ruflanir, magna upp andlega vanlíðan og geta ýtt undir, eða
jafnvel kallað fram, þunglyndi. Mikilvægt er að rjúfa þann víta-
hring og finna hvar einstaklingurinn stendur sterkastur fyrir.
hefð bundin mælitæki geta verið vafasöm til að skima eftir
þunglyndi hjá einstaklingum með PV og þarf alltaf að nota
klíníska dómgreind samhliða til þess að aðgreina einkenni PV
og þunglyndis.
Það er í verkahring hjúkrunarfræðinga að upplýsa parkin-
sonssjúklinga um þunglyndi ásamt því að vera vakandi fyrir
þunglyndiseinkennum og veita viðeigandi upplýsingar varðandi
einkenni og úrræði. Til þess að aðstoða við upplýs ingagjöf
hvetjum við starfsfólk til þess að nýta sér upplýsingar sem koma
fram í nýja fræðslubæklingnum „Þunglyndi og parkinsons-
veiki“.
