CANT YOU STOP THAT NOISE OUTSIDE?
THIS WEEK AT THE CINEMA
fiamla B16:
IRENE
Here you have one of the
most popular musical comedies
of all times. The plot deals with
the scintillating career of a
little Irish-girl who is catapul-
ted into a fame she doesn’t
want. Through the kindly ef-
forts of two young society men
she becomes a model for a fas-
hionable dress shop in which
they are financially interested.
She is assigned to model a spec-
ial gown at a big society ball,
but accidentally ruins the gown
and has to wear an old-fashion-
ed one of the mother’s instead.
This makes her the sensation
of the affair, and when society
takes her up, the shop manager
seizes the opportunity for a
fine publicity stunt and installs
the girl in a swanky Fifth Av-
enue apartment as an Irish soc-
iety girl, seeing to it that she
wears only his dress creations.
How the scheme works out, and
its results on the triangle ro-
mance between the girl and the
2 young men, leads to the fast-
moving climax of the picture.
The talented Miss Neagle,
"who was herself a musical
comedy star in England before
she turned to the screen, is
said to give a remarkable per-
formance in the title-role, with
Milland and Alan Marshal as
the rival society men also scor-
------ 4-----------
ing notably. Roland Young
plays the role of the dress shop
manager, May Robson that of
Miss Neagle’s grandmother and
Billie Burke that of Marshal’s
mother.
Luxurious settings, which in-
clude a palatial Long Island
mansion, an elaborate dress-
making establisment and a su-
ite of rooms in an exclusive ho-
tel, all add to the glitter of the
story, and contrast with the
cheap apartment-home of the
heroine.
Anna Neagle, the Brit-
ish musical comedy star, is
heretofore known to film-
goers chiefly in dramatic
roles like those of “Nurse
Edith Cavell,” and “Vic-
toria the Great.”
Warner Baxter’s first
big chance on the screen
was the role of the Cisco
Kid in “Old Arizona.” The
performance won him the
Academy Award. He has
said that the Cisco Kid is
by far his favourite other
self.
Lynn Bari is the daught-
er of an American clergy-
man. She played her first
romantic lead in “Mr.
Moto’s Gamble.” ^
Nfja Bio
The Return of the
Cisco Hid.
On Tuesday night Nyja Bio
is going to show a very enter-
taining wild west film, „The
Cisco Kid,“ starring Warner
Baxter as the character that
made him famous.
“The Cisco Kid had escaped
capture because he could shoot
five-sixths of a second sooner
than any other man ......”
Thus O. Henry described his
romantic bandit, whom Warn-
er Baxter brings back to the
screen of Nyja Bio on Tuesday,
Oct. 15th.
The Cisco is facing a firing
squad but thanks to Lopez
(Cesar Romero) and Gordito, his
henchmen, who thoughtfully
substitute blank cartridges in
the soldier’s rifles, he escapes
unharmed.
He plans to hold up a stage
coach. The arrangement is for
the Cisco Kid to board the co-
ach as a passenger. Lopez and
Gordito are to waylay it a few
miles further on. However, in
the coach Cisco meets lovely
Ann Carver (Lynn Bari) and
her grandfather, Colonel Bix-
by (Henry Hull), whose inter-
grity is as questionable as his
sobriety.
\
When his hencmen hold up
the coach, Cisco surprises them
with an amazing bit of gunplay
which drives the would-be rob-
bers away to the delight and
admiration of Ann.
The girl and her grandfat-
her are on their way to Front-
eras to take over a ranch which
a friend, Alan Davis (Kane
Richmond), had gone on ahead
to buy for them with their
savings.
But Fronteras has a local
dictator in the person of Sheriff
McNally who runs the town,
and, having accused Alan of
stealing the money for the
ranch, appropriates it himself
and puts the boy in gaol.
When Ann and the Colonel
arrive and protest to McNally,
they are clapped in prison, too.
Meanwhile Cisco has prepar-
ed an elaborate dinner party in
honour of Ann and the Colonel.
When he learns of their plight,
he stages a fire in the town and
the two prisoners escape.
To impress Ann with his de-
votion, Cisco decides to get the
deed for the ranch. McNally is
asking a hundred thousand
dollars for the deed so the ban-
dits rob the McNally bank of
that sum on the following day.
Returning to Ann with the
deed, Cisco discovers that she
is planning to marry Alan.
I a rage, Cisc plots to lead
Alan into the trap McNally has
set for himself. He relents,
however, when he learns that
only Alan can make Ann happy
and by some spectacular riding
beats Alan to the ambush.
There, by a clever trick, he
routs his enemies and, with
Lopez and Gordito, takes to the
road again on the look out for
some lonely stage coach or new
beatiful senoritas.
