10 SUNDAY POST John’s Christ- mas Party. For the Yuletide feast of the Court, in 1213, King John ordered 40 oxen, 500 lambs, 200 deer, 420 head of pork, 5000 fowls, an unspecified number of pheas- ants and , partridges, 10000 salt eels, 15000 herrings and other fish, together with almonds, pepper, and other condiments. Large quantities of wine and ale werp required to wash down these few eatables, and 2000 ells of linen were requisitioned for tablecloths. The Papal interdict Much lay over the country at that time does not seem to have notably interfered with the good cheer; if this was John’s idea of Christmas under a cloud it may be wondered what sort of a spread he would have arranged if he had been on really good terms with his spiritual advisers. I was under a spell that I would never be able to be with my husband except Xmas, unless I oould find some- body who was able to tell me where I spent Xmas. You alone have been able to do so, and therefore I will give you all my possessions here. You will from now on be a very rich man. After this Snotra disappeared and has not been seen since.
