found elsewhere, see e.g. Islendingabok (1930), p. 25, but J>6r3-
ar saga is the most likely source.
56“ 120 pedum: See Vatsdæla saga (1934), p. 36, and Kjal-
nesinga saga (1911), p. 6. Both sagas were to be found in Vatns-
hyrna, cf. Introduction, ch. III nos. 25 and 31.

5713-19, 29-32 prom Kjalnesinga saga, pp. 7-8. J. A. H. Post-
humus, in her edition of 1911, p. IV, has compared the passages
with the extant principal manuscripts of the saga. From this it
appears that the B-class (principal manuscript: AM 504 4to) is
undoubtedly descended from Vatnshyrna, even though the editor
does not consider there is decisive proof to show that AM 504
4to is a direct copy of it. Despite the doubts of the editor, how-
ever, it must be regarded as extremely probable. A few minor
variants are probably due to AJ’s inaccuracy in rendering the
text, and similarly nothing can be based on the presence of ortho-
graphic differences. There is no need to go into details here; a
reference to Posthumus’s discussion will suffice.
5730 jiar: ‘f>å’ Kjalnesinga saga. The word is probably a mis-
reading (by the compositor?) of f>aa with aa written together.
583~6 See Eyrbyggja saga, ch. 10 (edn. 1864, p. 12). The text
reads somewhat differently in the manuscripts AM 448 4to
and AM 442 4to, and a corresponding text is not otherwise
found in the preserved Eyrbyggja-manuscripts. See Introduction,
ch. III no. 19.
