for the next 5 years. In this resolution
it is emphasised that Árborg is a
dynamic and modern local authority
utilising the opportunities afforded by
its location and that Árborg is a
strong local authority making good
on its promises. It is also empha-
sised that the local authority intends
to become a model employer with
„open“ administration. The resolution
states: „The family is the cornerstone
of society. The local authority of
Árborg puts emphasis on securing its
welfare by formulating a coordinated
family policy and by creating a fami-
ly-friendly society.“
A new development plan is now
being prepared for the local authority
of Árborg, which was created in
1998 by the combination of four local
authorities - Eyrarbakki,
Sandvíkurhreppur, Selfoss and
Stokkseyri. The development plan
will address the inner organisation of
the local authority in light of the
opportunities which are now at hand.
One south-coast road is of immense
importance for such economies as
tourism in lceland. On this circular
road are the Keflavík airport,
Grindavík with the Blue Lagoon,
Þorlákshöfn, Eyrarbakki, Selfoss,
Hveragerði, and Reykjavík. The south
coast road is also important because
of safety in case of a volcanic erup-
tion. In discussing the future devel-
opment of the transportation network
it should be borne in mind that the
main road between the capital area
and Árborg is across Hellisheiði. That
road has to be made twice as wide
and given highway lighting, as is now
the case with the Reykjanes road.
Good, forward-looking planning is
needed in organising this transporta-
tion network before we can be sure
that they can become connecting
roads between districts in an urban
area.
The basic work, which has been
described here, is necessary as a
foundation for making Árborg com-
petitive and able to use its opportuni-
ties. More people have become
aware of this and development along
these lines is now taking place. It
would be wise to look at the future
development of this area as a whole,
including Reykjanes, the capital area,
Árborg and Akranes. In my opinion,
the time for that is now. ■
