The Woman's Uniquness
The design duo Spaksmannsspjarir (boutique and label) from lceland stands for
feminine, variable and individualistic fashions.
Spaksmannsspjarir was founded in 1993 by Björg Ingadóttir and Valgerður Torfadóttir. Although the company is very
small - so small that the two fashion designers have only three employees - Spaksmannsspjarir is regarded today as
one of lceland’s greatest alternative design labels. Ingadóttir and Torfadóttir believe that this is partly due to lceland’s
unique location. The island is situated exactly midway between Europe and America, but it remains remote enough to
be able to develop its own ideas. The line of fashion that was created in this environment is as cosmopolitan as it is
individualistic. It combines influences from both shores of the Atlantic, with personal impressions and inspirations from
the landscape of lceland.
The fashion of Spaksmannsspjarir is characterised by a combination of apparently contradictory aspects on another
level, too. Their creations are geared towards intelligent, independent women, but do not impose a particular image on
them. Instead, Spaksmannsspjarir opens up a wide range of possibilities and thus emphasises each individual woman’s
uniqueness. Depending on her mood and the occasion, she can bring out fashion’s feminine, practical or distinguished
notes. Natural materials and variable accessories ensure the wearability and adaptability of each item. ■
