AN EVENING OF MUSIC AT
FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH
Carol Westdal and Bob
Sheffield will present a
concert sponsored by the
Jon Sigurdsson Chapter
IODE, Wednesday, January
2, 1980, at 8:00 p.m. in the
First Lutheran Church, 580
Victor Street. The concert
will feature Vocal and
Clarinet selections.
Carol, twice a winner of
the Jon Sigurdsson Chapter
Music Scholarship, is in the
fourth year of a Bachelor’s
Programme (Voice Per-
formance) at the School of
Music, the University of
British Columbia. Bob holds
á Bachelor’s Degree in
Music from the same
University and is presently
OBITUARY GISU BENEDICTSON
On November 6th, 1979 at
St. Joseph’s Hospital in
Comox, B.C. Gisli
Benedictson passed away
after a short illness. He was
88 years old. He was
predeceased by his mother,
Guðlaug Gisladottir in the
year 1900 and his father,
Sera Benedikt Eyolfsson in
1913. He is survived by his
wife, Guðrun (Runa) living
at Comox, B.C. Two sons,
Lorne at Strathmore,
Alberta and Verne at
Comox, B.C. Five grand-
children and six great-

brothers, ' Egill and Skafti
and one half sister, Guðlaug
in Iceland. Gisli was born on
Februáry 2nd, 1891 in
Berufjorður, Iceland. He
moved to Canada when he
was twenty years of age.
After forty-four years as a
grain buyer ^t Kandahar
and Wynyard, Saskat-
chewan, he retired and
moved to the west coast.
Gisli took an active part in
community affairs, having
served many years on school
boards, in town council and
in church offices.
Pastor Josef Haave of New
Westminster conducted the
service. Interment in
Courtenay, B.C. Cemetery.
LECTURE ON
MODERN ICELANDIC
LITERATURE AT THE
UNIVERSITY OF
MANITOBA
Professor Sveinn Skorri
Hoskuldsson, former Dean
of Arts at the University of
Iceland, will give two public
lectures at the University of
Manitoba on January 14 and
16.
His first lecture is on THE
POST-WAR ICELANDIC
NOVEL and his second on
GUNNAR GUNNARSSON
AND GERMANY. The
lectures will be held at 8:00
p.m. in the Senior Common
Room, University College,
University of Manitoba.
Professor Hoskuldsson is
a scholar of international
reputation and we trust that
a number of people will wish
to take this opportunity to
hear him.
