Christmas cards are timeless harbin-
gers of peace and good will; they con-
vey a message of love and affection,
from the very first cards our children
receive from Santa Claus to the
homemade Christmas cards made with
loving care from our grandchildren;
from a delightful card from an old friend
Numi, 25 years ago, to another special
card which has travelled back and forth
each year over a span of 20 years. The
written messages enclosed in these
Christmas cards also have a special
meaning for us.
“Could you tell me the exact date
on which we stayed at your motel.
I need it for our Income Tax files. ”
It is with these thoughts of good will
that we send out Christmas cards each
year. However, there was one particu-
lar card which my husband, Albert, and
I, sent out one year that resulted in a
strange reaction indeed.
In the late I960s Albert and I owned
and operated a motel, the “Wincaim”
on King George Highway in Surrey,
B.C.. We started sending out Christmas
cards to some of our regular clients,
many of whom were from Washington
State and California.
One evening, about ten days after we
had mailed out the Christmas cards, I
received a phone call from a town in
Washington state. The lady on the phone
thanked us for the friendly and thought-
ful gesture of sending her and her hus-
band a card. Then she added, “Could
you tell me the exact date on which we
stayed at your motel. I need it for our
Income Tax files.”
I quickly checked through the ad-
mission cards and told her the date that
they had been registered. She thanked
me and said goodbye.
A couple of nights later, the same
lady phoned again. This time, in a sob-
bing tone. She told me that she didn’t
know what to do. She had not been
with her husband at our motel the night
he was registered there. She asked if I
would check the card date once again.
I did so, at the same time, wondering
just what we had let ourselves in for by
sending the Christmas cards. When I
confirmed the date she quickly hung
up.
The next night she phoned again,
this time sobbing wildly.
“I have no one to talk this over
with,” she pleaded, “Please help. What
should I do aboutmy husband cheating
on me?”
I told her, as gently as possible, that
I had no easy solution.
“But please tell me what to do,” she
begged, “I love him but he cheated on
>>
me.
I was in a quandary, then fínally said,
“If you sincerely love him you’ll have to
try and forgive him. It’s really up to you
to decide but perhaps you should give
him a second chance.”
She thanked me and that was the last
I heard of her so I hoped that she had
somehow resolved her problem.
Fortunately, that was the only seri-
ous repercussion we had from sending
out Christmas cards during our sojoum
as motel owners.
“I have no one to talk this over
with,” she pleaded, “Please help.
What should I do about my hus-
band cheating on me?”
On a happier note we looked for-
ward to hearing from and receiving our
annual Christmas card and letter from a
dear old English lady from Durban,
South Africa. She was a regular sum-
mer guest during the 5.5 years we oper-
ated our motel.
And to this day, as I look at the
beautiful card received from Numi
Snifeld 25 years ago, I can once again
visualize him, toes tapping as he played
a lively jig on his violin.
Christmas cards have the power of
invoking memories of friends, places
and special events.
96th Birthday Celebrated
Herdís Thorkelsson celebrated her
96th birthday Sept. 28,1991. She is the
daughter of pioneers Guðbrandur and
Jóhanna Jörundsson, and came with
them and her brothers and sisters from
Iceland.
Dísa has lived alone in her little
house until recent surgery on her eyes
in October, decided her move into
the Senior Citizens Home in Lundar.
She is still very active and despite her
failing eyesight, continues to knit and
to sew patchwork quilts on her little
sewing machine. For many years she
has hooked rag mgs, and of course,
made pönnukökur for many occa-
sions.
Dísa married Guðjon Thorkelsson
and they had four children. Her hus-
band and two children passed away
several years ago. Her daughter Lillian
and husband Bill Gaudrie live in
Coronach, Saskatchewan, and her
son Kristinn and his wife Alice reside
in Lundar.
