The Jón Sigurðsson Chapter
IODE held their annual
presentation of scholarships on
Saturday, November 16, at
Betelstaður, Winnipeg. Fifteen
scholarships were presented to
deserving young students.
Johanna Gudrun Skaptason
Memorial Scholarship
Nebojsa (Nesh) Lekic is the
son of Vesna and Dragan Lekic
of Winnipeg. He is a 'Magna
Cum Laude' graduate of
Vincent Massey Collegiate
where he received the Govemor
General's Medal and the
University of Manitoba
Entrance Scholarship. Nesh is
enrolled at the University of
Manitoba working towards a
degree in Engineering or
Theoretical Physics. Nesh was
an active member of the 'Key
'Club' at Vincent Massey
Collegiate where the mandate is
to volunteer, offer community
services and raise funds for
charitable organizations. He
worked with other students in
the capacity of a math tutor and
produced study material that
will be used in future classes.
He was also a peer tutor in
chemistry, physics, computer
science and English.
Ashley Krakowka is the
daughter of Sharon and Larry
Krakowka of Neepawa, MB.
Her grandparents are Verma and
John Zahorodny. Verma's par-
ents were bom in Iceland.
Ashley graduated from
Neepawa Area Collegiate
Institute where she was on the
Principal's Honour Roll during
each of her high school years.
She was the school champion in
Grade IX in the Pascal
Canadian Mathematics
Competition. Ashley is
enrolled at the University of
Manitoba working towards a
degree as a Geophysicist. This
year she received the University
of Manitoba Advanced Early
Admission Scholarship and the
M.E. Osborne Memorial
Scholarship. Ashley played an
active role in her high school,
serving on the Yearbook com-
mittee and taking part in curl-
ing, fastball, track and field and
the Science Fair.

Memorial Scholarship
Kelli Johnson is the daughter
of Kris and Mandy Johnson of
Warren, MB. Her grandparents
are Emil and Anna (Amason)
Johnson of Oak Point, MB.
Kelli graduated from Warren
Collegiate with an excellent
academic record. She was
awarded the Coca Cola
Scholarship in 2000. She was
on the Dean's Honour Roll in
her first year at the University
of Manitoba and this year she is
in the second year of
Environmental Design/Interior
Design. Kelli was involved in
many extra curricular activities
and in volunteer work. This
included the 4H Program as
well as Teenagers against
Dmnk Driving and Safe Grad.
Her sports activities included
skating, ringette and baseball.
Michael Johnson is the son of
Kris and Mandy Johnson of
Warren, MB. Michael's grand-
parents are Emil and Anna
(Arnason) Johnson of Oak
Point, MB. Michael is an hon-
ours graduate of Warren
Collegiate. He received the
Elizabeth May Markle
Scholarship and the Coca Cola
Scholarship. Michael is
enrolled at the University of
Manitoba and will graduate in
2003 with an Honours
Psychology degree in the
Faculty of Science. His aspira-
tions include graduate study in
Occupational Therapy or
Psychology. In 1999, he was
nominated for a Faculty of
Science teaching award as a
result of the assistance he gave
to fellow students in biology.
Beginning early in 2002 he has
been involved in highly specif-
ic research projects which
involve academic achievement
related to teaching style, profil-
ing and moral development in
relation to computer crime.

Memorial Schoiarship
Deanna Einarson is the
daughter of Wayne and Brenda
Pocket. Deanna returned to
University in 1999, after an
absence of several years, to
complete her Bachelor of Arts
degree. In 2001, she enrolled
in the Faculty of Education at
the University of Manitoba.
She is on the Dean's Honour

Roll and will graduate in the
spring of 2003. In order to
retum to University after an
absence of several years,
Deanna worked full time and
during this time volunteered at
the Youville Centre assisting
with child care while single
mothers attended seminars.
Deanna was involved in many
school and community activi-
ties while in high school. For
several summers she volun-
teered at a camp for under-
privileged children. She was
the youth representative on the
Waste Management Committee
and the Chamber of Commerce
in the town of Dauphin during
her high school years. She
received a Provincial
Leadership Award for out-
standing commitment to extra
curricular and community
activities.

Music Scholarship
Matthew Simonson is the son
of Janine and Curtis Simonson
of Marquette, MB. Matthew
graduated from Warren
Collegiate with an excellent
academic record and received
six awards upon graduation.
He is now attending the
University of Winnipeg.
Matthew has achieved his
Grade VIII Piano with high
honours, and his Grade II
Theory with First Class
Honours from the Royal
Conservatory of Toronto. He
has recently been experiment-
ing with music creation on the
computer and received an
award in 2001 from the
Canadian Information
Processing Society for new
media(K-12). Matthew was an
outstanding student in his vol-
unteer contributions to Warren
Collegiate as well as to the
community. He played for
musical rehearsals and per-
formances and rearranged
scores for soloists. He provid-
ed musical background for
multi-media music presenta-
tions, sound, lighting and video
recordings and co-ordinated the
music for all school concerts
and performances.
Snjolaug Gillis Memorial
Scholarship
Kristen Robertson is the
daughter of Don and Joan
Robertson of Minto, MB.
Kristen graduated from
Boissevain Collegiate where
she was on the Honour Roll
throughout her high school
years. She is presently enrolled
in first year at the University of
Manitoba and will enter the
Bachelor of Nursing Program.
She was awarded the
Boissevain Health Centre
Auxiliary Bursary and the
Manitoba Nurses Union Local
#7 Bursary. Kristin was
involved in many sports, includ-
ing basketball, badminton and
fastball and she was awarded a
"Female Athlete of the Year
Award" in 1998, as well as other
athletic awards. She volun-
teered in many areas and was a
Primary basketball coach for
several years. Kristen assisted
Student Govemment members
to prepare promotional items for
sporting events and dances.
Gyda Naylor Memorial
Scholarship
Tamara Enns is the daughter
of Harry and Mars Enns who
presently live in Chicago, IL.
Tamara is attending the
University of Manitoba and is
in her fourth year at the
Faculty of Human Ecology,
Department of Family Studies
where she has been on the
Dean's Honour Roll. Her con- •
centration is Child Studies,
specializing in infancy and
dealing with special needs.
Her goal is to open an orphan-
age in Africa. Tamara's volun-
teer work over the past few
years mcludes helping to bring
medical aid into villages in
Africa. Much of her work in
Haiti, where she worked on
developmental projects for
infants from birth to two and
one-half years, involved mus-
cular therapy and helping chil-
dren learn to walk. While
attending university, Tamara
volunteers two half days a
week at the Children's Hospital
Play Centre.
