The Radio Log by Bob Burcliette, AN This week we are featuring the program America’s Pop Mu- sic with some facts about the host Andy Mansfield. He calls Stroudburg, Pennsylva- nia, his home town, but he has lived in North Hollywood, Cali- fornia since 1937. Andy started Playing piano at the age of ten and had the first jazz combo in high school. He later studied at Ithaca Con- servatory of Music and Cornell University. He played piano with three nationally known recording dance orchestras and was pia- nist and arranger at radio sta- tion WLW, Cinncinnati, Ohio for three years. Andy owns one of the na- tion’s largest private record col- lections, over 80,000 discs, hous- ed in a seperate studio building at his home. His collection spe- cializes in Bing Crosby, tra- ditional jazz and swing era bands, although all fields are covered and date back to 1895. In addition to flat discs the col- lection also includes early cy- linder transcriptions and tape recordings. Completely cross-in- dexed any item can be located in a moment’s time by either title, artist or category. Andy and his wife, Virginia first met at Radio station WLW Cincinati, Ohio, where she was staff vocalist and Andy arranger and pianist. Following successful radio contracts in the East, they came to Los Angeles, for the Mutual Broad- casting System in 1937, and they’ve remained in the South- land ever since. This charming couple bought their San Fernando Valley home in 1939 and proudly refer to it as their “Bar Nothing Ranch”. The Mansfield hobby house, a seperate building fac- ing their swimming pool, is a collector’s paradise. Here is their priceless record collection of over 80,000 discs from which they select those used on their radio programs. Andy Mansfield was recently selected to be curator of the Recording Section of the Holly- wood Motion Pictures Museum.
