Sigurjon H. Gestsson releases a weather balloon and its payload, a radiosonde that
transmits meteorological data to the radar tracking device located in Bldg. 187.

sts, the transmitter is para-
uted to the ground by a paper
chute. The parachute keeps the
radiosonde from becoming a deadly
missile after it begins its fall
from more than 18 miles up.No at-
tempt is made to recover the
transmitters.
The information that the naval
station RAWINSONDE records is
teletypedto the main Fleet Weath-
er Facility here. The data is
shared with other stations around
the world that released balloons
at the same time.
The information our facility
releases is then integrated with
that of all other reporting sta-
tions and a chart of the upper
atmosphere is made. The chart
covers the area from the midwest-
em U.S. to central Europe and
provides invaluable information
to pilots and weather forecasters.
