Ttm Is it plugged in? It is? Ok....get the lights there, will you? Thanks. Now these slides were taken up in Iceland. That's right, ICELAND! I was up there way back in 1972, stationed at the NATO Base in Keflavik. This shot here is the entrance to the base. You can see the sign there. (CLICK) This one gives you some idea of the "Midnight Sun" you hear so much about. It was taken about 11:30 at night, I think, and you can see it's still pretty light out. Later in the summer the sun nev- er goes down at all. We used to play baseball un- til one in the morning sometimes! (CLICK) This is where I worked. No, don't laugh --- most of the buildings on base were quonset huts just like this one. They were ok. (CLICK) Oh, wow --- the Navy Exchange! You ever see a quonset hut that big? The Commissary they had up there was a big quonset hut, too - it was painted bright blue and red, I remember. The Exchange you see here ordered some camera gear for me once. I wonder if it ever came in? (CLICK) Ha-Ha! Check out the uniforms we wore! Isn't that a scream? I remember how as soon as bell-bot- tom pants became fashionable, the Navy quit using them. I think this shot was taken around the first of June, but you notice we were still wearing pret- ty heavy coats. The summers there weren't what you'd call scorchers. (CLICK) There's my old car - the last one I ever had that burned gasoline. Isn't that a beauty? Those old gas cars were a disaster for the environment, I guess, but they sure were a lot of fun to drive. That one could go over a hundred! (CLICK) Fleet Reserve Assn. installs new officers FRA LEADERSHIP CHANGES - New slates of officers for Branch 255 of the Fleet Reserve Association (FRA) and its ladies auxiliary (LAFRA) were in- stalled Saturday at a Top of the Rock dinner. Taking over the leadership of the Northern Lights Branch were (photo above, top row, 1 to r): Ken Those, secretary/treasurer; Ed Pasek, president; Joel Johnson, first vice president; and Charle Ball, second vice president. The outgoing offi cers, lower row: W. C. "Bud" Deal, secretary treasurer; Walter Rumrill, vice president; and James Weaver, president. Weaver, who is depart- ing Keflavik, was presented letters of commenda- tion and appreciation for his service to Branch 255. Outgoing LAFRA officers (photo below, front, 1 to r): Betty Weaver, secretary; Pat Morrell, president; and Jan Davis, vice president. The new ladies leaders (top row): Barbara Smith, secre- tary; Karen Schloesser, president; and Kay Panter vice president. Missing is reelected treasurer Ruth Kilmer. Here's the club I went to while I was up there. Good prices for drinks, I remember. They had bands and USO shows and movies there, too.- And go-go girls, sometimes. I guess I've already told you a hundred times that Doreen Clapp got her start there. (CLICK) Boy, if I'd known how close I was to a fortune when I took this one, I don't know what I would have done! That's pure Icelandic lava you see there! There was plenty of it around base. Of course, nobody knew back then that it contained a mysterious mineral that could instantly cure the common cold. '72 was several years before the big Lava Rush started. A geologist saw this shot once and told me that just this much lava would be worth at least a half a million bucks! Wow --------- well, that's it. You wanna turn the lights back on, please? 10 June 2, 1972
