parents should not have to share a bedroom with a child; no
more than two children should have to share one bedroom; a
child 6 years or older should not have to share a bedroom
with a child of the opposite sex, and a child 10 years or older
is eligible for a separate bedroom.
We apply these criteria based on a child’s age at the end of
a person’s tour. That way, families will possess the maximum
amount of living space allowed them throughout their time
here. Residents assigned two-bedroom quarters based on the
above guidance may apply for a home which will provide one-
bedroom-per-child. However, there is a severe three bed-
room housing shortage on base, and even newly arrived,
three-bedroom eligible families must wait nearly six months
for permanent housing.

Editor’s note: Capt. Allen A. Efraimson, NAS commanding offi-
cer, recently answered base residents’ questions on Feedback.
Transcripts of Feedback are provided to The White Falcon by
the NAS Administration Office.
Q: What are the rules regarding Icelandic citizens using
NEX facilities such as the Beauty Shop?
A: In general, Icelandic citizens should not have access to
base services. Icelanders who are the dependent spouses or
children of U.S. military or command-sponsored employees
are allowed to use all base facilities, and Icelandic employees
are authorized to use NEX food service centers. In addition,
NATO personnel such as flight crews on temporary duty to
the base do have access to all air station services. Please con-
tact the NEX Customer Service Desk at 2141 if you have any
further questions about the policy or concerns that you would
like to address.
Q: I live in a two-bedroom house, and have two sons, 4
months and 6 years. It is difficult for them to live in the same
room, and I would like to know if I could move into a three-
bedroom house?
A: While DoD’s goal is to house families with one-bed-
room-per-child, this is dependent upon housing availability.
At NAS, we don’t have enough housing to implement DoD’s
standard, so we must apply the following Navy regulations:
Q: Would it be possible to hold a public visitation or carni-
val next Thanksgiving, so that our Icelandic neighbors could
celebrate this American custom with us?
A: Actually, we are examining a number of options to have
public visitations. The best choice, both due to command
functions and weather, seems.to be next June.
Correction to last month’s Feedback.- People who experience
damage to their housing units for any reason should contact the
