100% for the first 55 miles (some ridged ice),
and for the last 5 rniles 90%, consisting of
slush, brash and blocks, with a few small and
medium floes with cracks. Many icebergs off
K. Gustav Holm and af few tabular icebergs
approx. 25 miles offshore all along the coast
south to K. Dan where the ice concentratrion is
°/io for 45 ntiles offshore. — No ice formations
were seen near Jan Mayen.
5/1 A belt of ice is extending from pos. 6624/-
2525 toward W and NW (S/T Juli).
s/i A ship at 6606/2606 reported scattered ice
in the vicinity.
9/i A ship at 6654/2342 observed consider-
able area of scattered ice.
10/i An English trawler reports: 40 hours ago
ice was observed 20 miles to the W of Isafjord. —
North ice now N of Cape Horn at the 100 fat-
hom line, field ice with some icebergs among, Al-
so ice is reported round to 45 meters NNW of
Dýrafjord.
11 /1 Ice coverage ^/io to 5/io (small and
medium floes) was observed from 6630/2500
to 6820/1900.
21/i Ice coverage 100% observed for 40 miles
off Greenland coast, thirty miles S of K. Dan,
increasing to 80 miles offshore at K. Louis
Ussing. Many icebergs about 15 miles S of K.
Dan and many growlers and bergy bits 45
miles E of K. Dan and a few 65 miles E. Crack in
ice ran from 6540/3545 to 6558/3450.
28 /i Newly formed ice was observed at
6845/2030 witli about. 9/io coverage. At 6900/-
2030 broken ice was seen, consisting of blocks
and brash progressing to 7000/2030 with 9/io
coverage.
FEBRUARY 1954.
The distance of the main ice edge from
S t r a u m ne s about 120 miles, the nearest
approach of scattered bloclts and brash about
90 miles.
“/2 An edge of close drift ice was observed
on 6750/2400 to 6850/2000 From about 6900/-
2300 to K. Brewster the ice consisted of con-
solidated big ice floes.
6/2 Ice was extending out from the Green-
land coast for 55 miles between 6750/3105 and
6610/3410, with approx. 9/io coverage for the
first 50 miles and 8/io to 9/io coverage for the
last 5 miles — with many bergs and bits. Five
cracks were observed along the track ranging
from ^/2 to 2 miles long and 15—50 feet wide.
8/2 Ice was extending 50 miles out from the
Greenland coast from 40 miles S of K. Dan
to 20 mijes N of K. Edvard Holm, with 10/io
concentration for the first 25 miles and 8/io for
the last 25 miles. A few bergs were observed.
A 5 rnile radius puddie was observed at 6730/-
3230. A 7 mile radius coverage of medium floes
and slush was observecl at 6450/3230. — 5/10
to 8/10 coverage of giant floes and slush was
observed 25 miles NW and SE of 6650/2645.
14/2 Ice coverage 10/io was observed for ap-
prox. 55 miles off the Greenland coast between
K. Edvard Holm and K. Brewster with a 12
mile wide belt of blocks and brash extencling
eastward to 6625/2645.
22/2 The ice boundary was 30 miles off K.
Brewster increasing to 85 miles off Iv. Dan.
Concentration was 10/10 the first 5—10 miles
off the coast and then °/io to 7/io- Broad leads
and polynyas were observed off K. Brewster.
MARCH 1954.
The ice conditions seem to be almost the
same as in February.
4/3 Ice was extencling 90 miles out from
the Greenland coast at K. Gustav Holm, with
approx. 8/io concentration of blocks and brash.
10/,3 Ice concentration in Scoresbysund was
approx. 8/io young polar ice, slush, medium
floes and giant floes.

- 7100/0430 - 7110/0230 - 7150/0000 -
7216/0030 E - 7226/0130 E - 7300/0300 E.
Within the ice edge there is a zone of 60—80
naut. miles consisting of young winter ice. (From

running: 7000/1100 W - 7050/0900 - 6955/-
0700 - 7000/0500 - 7120/0000 (Norsk Polar
Institutt).
22/s The ice boundary was 40 miles off
Scoresbysund to 60 miles off K. Gustav Holm,
with 8/10 to 10/i0 concentration of new ancl
polar ice.
28/z A few icebergs and bergy bits were ob-
served from 6515/3330 to 6615/3200. Boundary
of ice pack not determined.
