Bad news if true! Leifur, a free spirit
in the old tradition, had often looked
upon his favorite poet toasting their
mutual idol, the Moon, over a foaming
mug. Columbus heard him croon pen-
sively:
Temperence on the rampage
Is killing off our cheer,
But not until the sea runs dry
Will I give up my beer.
Leifur's mood puzzled Christopher,
but he sensed that muttering these
mysterious lines gave the giant some
sort of comfort. "Take it easy, pal," he
said soothingiy as he noted Leifur's
darkening mood. "those news hounds
have a way of getting their wires cross-
ed and they use everything for propa-
ganda. Trust them to get it all garbled
on the way from North Dakota to
Paradise."
"It's probably pure fabrication
without a shred of truth," Leifur
allowed, "the sort of news we get up
here, but to come back to the point,
you must take some blame for what
happened in America. Did you know
that your countrymen killed people
there and destroyed a culture in many
ways better than their own?"
"That's a blemish on our fame, all
right," Columbus conceded, "one that
follows conquest like a curse, and your
righteous posture ill becomes a Viking.
It doesn't concern me, anyway. I was
never a colonizer like your father, who
both discovered and settled Green-
land. Do you blame him and his
resourceful Vikings for what happened
to their ill-fated colony in 'that
country?" Christopher bared his teeth
in a sneering grin, his Mediterranean
blood at the boiling point. This was
refreshing change from the stifling
peace that surrounded him and the
eternal wail of the harps. At last he had
found a worthy opponent.
Leifur was about to deliver a moral
lecture when they were again inter-
rupted by the North Dakotans in their
Van Norman
Funeral services were held at Grace
Lutheran Church at Brandon on June
21st with Pastor Forrest Stroup of-
ficiating. Interment followed in
Rosewood Memorial Gardens. Pall-
bearers were Staff Sergents C.E.
Ferguson and B.C. Hawkins, Con-
» stables W.B. McMaster, L.A. Lambert,
R. Pare and Gary Harrison of the Royal
Canadian Mounted Police.
The surviving family has been be-
qeauthed a life time of memories of a
kind and gentle man, and this is being
shared by the many friends of Robert
Simon Van Norman.

carriage and he saw a banner with a
late news bulletin, announcing in big,
bold letter:
"THE POET K.N. ALONE REFUSES
TO JOIN THE GOOD TEMPLARS".
"Hurrah for the old sport! Now let's
wet our whistles!" Leifur shouted, and
the two hastened to the largest bar on
the street.
"Now I know where to turn if I can
manage to move out of here," Colum-
bus observed stroking his beard.
Leifur ordered beer a thousand years
old while Christopher asked for wine
that had mellowed in a Spanish
monastery for five hundred years.
"A toast to K.N!" shouted Leifur
Eiriksson, raising his mug.
"A toasf to your excellent poet!"
cried Christopher Columbus.
At that Leifur began to sing, his
thundering voice echoing throughout
Paradise.
Thor would not deny his thirst.
My message loud and clear,
Not before the sea runs dry
Will I forsake my beer.
