6 Former presidential yacht, the Mayflower, used by seven presi- dents from Theodore Roosevelt to Herbert Hoover, undergoes reconditioning at Norfolk, Va., for use as Coast Guard convoy escort vessel under the name of Butte. Marine Private inspects carvings of a native duck and lizard done while he was a patient in U.S. Naval hospital in New Zealand.#With him is New Zealand member of the American Red Cross. One of the most dramatic pictures of war (above) shows Chinese nurse tending wound- ed soldier in field while medical corpsman helps another casualty to dressing station under Jap fire. Freak accident in which carrier-based plane did nose-stand while trying to land on heaving deck of U.S. flat-top in Pacific caused nary a flutter of excitement among veteran crew mem- bers who extricated pilot, miraculously uninjured, and fixed plane in 24 hours. 1^4, : Posse of ranchers gathers (below) at home of Laramie, Wyo., couple killed by gunman. Shortly after picture was taken, the posse fanned out over the rough countryside to track down killer who terrorized vicinity.
