The house is sanctioned Under new management, theNASKEF Bowling alley receives sanctioning by the American Bowling Congress By J02(SW/A W) Mat Sohl Naval Air Station Keflavlk’s (NASKEF) bowling alley now has a new king- pin. Since arriving at NASKEF three months ago, Chris Bennett, the base’s newest bowling alley manager has set out to leave his mark here at NASKEF. Bennett, an avid bowler, is aiming to extend his passion for the sport of bowling to the Keflavik community. “I love it,” said Bennett commenting on his position as bowling alley manager. “This is a dream job.” Since assuming management of NASKEF’s lanes Bennett has begun to initiate a series of improvements to the alley. “The first thing that I wanted to do after assuming this job was to get the house sanctioned so that we can help get our bowlers all that they deserve,” said Bennett. The house Bennett refers to is the NASKEF bowling alley and the sanctioning body he received an endorsement from was the American Bowling Congress, or ABC. The ABC is the only sanctioning body in the sport of bowling. Under this sanc- tion qualifying Keflavik bowlers will now have the opportunity to earn and wear official ABC rings. The Keflavik bowling community can earn these rings by scoring a 298, 299 or 300 game, or by scoring 800 in a 3 game series. Bennett himself has earned four rings. Bennett hopes that some of the enhancements that he’s making at the alley will help all bowlers here not only better enjoy, but improve their bowling game. In NASKEF bowlers will now be able to earn official ABC rings like the ones shown above. (Photo by J02(SW/AW) Mat Sohl) recent months Bennett has added a new oil pattern to the lanes, a move he states will add consistency to the lanes performance. “What we’re doing is we’re making the lanes more consistent -not easier. We want to ensure that week in and week out the shot is the same,” said Bennett. So far it has worked. In the past two weeks there have been five 287+ games at the NASKEF bowl- ing alley and three 700 series - a feat that bowling alley officials claim was assisted by the new consistent oiling pattern. Another noted improvement at the local lanes is in the alley’s pro shop. Since taking over as manager, Bennett has expanded the shop’s bowling ball selection and added several other bowling products. Bennett is certified by the ABC to custom drill bowling balls. As we approach the holidays, Bennett plans on hosting a variety of themed bowling events and discounted bowling specials. On Veteran’s Day, Nov. 11 the bowling alley will offer three free bowling games and shoe rental to all active, retired and separated military members. Interested bowlers need to arrive to the lanes early to sign up for their free games. House Gymnasium Director and local sports guru, Jim Smith, names his sporting feat of the week. This week instead of a play of the week I've got a match of the week from the pre- season volleyball tournament. The match of the week was the champion- ship between 932 ACS and 85 MSS. 85 MSS brought a powerhouse team with a double load of talent and it showed during the first game of the match with 85 MSS winning 25-17. 932 ACS brought the team with heart to the tournament. This team just kept hanging in and playing tough and when the night was over they came out on top, winning the second and third games 25- 21 and 15-12. Congratulations to 932 ACS. See you on the courts, Jim Page 14 The White Falcon October 20. 2004
