AFN Keflavik's weekly cgll in show ‘Icebreaker’ The “Icebreaker” of February 14, informed viewers about several programs designed to improve the community. The United States Air Forces Europe (USAFE) has Command Special Interest Projects to help its members attain the most knowledge and teach them how to work smarter with fewer resources. “Icebreaker” featured four of these projects; Combat Fitness, Combat Nighthawk, Combat Proud and Combat Touch. Combat Fitness gives airmen the tools they need to help stay “fit to fight.” At the core of the program is the FITLINXX computer program, which allows members to log their workouts and keep track of their progress. The system also offers members information on fitness and nutri- tion and gives members with lower physical train- ing assessment scores information on how they may be able to improve their scores. Combat Nighthawk gives senior non-commis- sioned officers (SNCOs), non-commissioned offi- cers (NCOs) and company grade officers (CGOs) an opportunity to visit work centers whose mem- bers work nights and weekends. The visits give both the visitors and the work center members a chance to meet each other and exchange informa- tion. Shift workers get a chance to meet SNCOs, NCOs and CGOs from the 85th Group and the visitors get a chance to see what happens in work centers they may otherwise not have seen and learn more about the total mission of the whole group. Combat Proud improves the appearance of our workplaces and fosters pride in the members who work there. The program provides money to units and dormitories for self-help projects and equip- ment not otherwise provided for in the budget. This past year Combat Proud provided money for DVD players and exercise equipment in the dorms. Combat Proud also facilitates community clean-ups and helps units get the necessary tools or supplies to accomplish their renovation needs. Combat Touch focuses on the emotional and spiritual well being of Air Force members. The program offers spiritual growth seminars, work center visits and volunteers to coach members in CLEP and DANTES testing. The program goal is to have at least 150 work center visits each month so that airmen know who their chaplains are and to provide an extra opportunity for them to build relationships with their spiritual leaders. Tune in to “Icebreaker” on Roller Channel 21 every Tuesday at 7 p.m. to see the latest events and happenings in Keflavik. Mediathon 2006 The Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) and Air Force Assistance Fund (AFAF) are two service unique charities which allow military members and family members to help each other. Each year, the two charities hold fund drives so they will be able to help anyone who needs them throughout the year. AFN Keflavik contributes a week of time to hold a fundraiser as our contribu- tion to the NMCRS and AFAF fund drives. “Mediathon” offer community members a chance to hear their favorite songs, bid on numer- ous donated items and services and participate in one of the exciting events. The event is broadcast live on 104.1 FM and Roller Channel 21 from 8 a.nr. to 6 p.m. to allow as many people as possible the chance to partici- pate. This year’s event will be March 13 - 17. Every year there are theme days and a major event for the day. Monday’s theme is Superhero Day and features a Poker Tournament. Tuesday is Tourist/Culture Day and offers a Pie-in-the-Face contest. Wednesday is Cops and Robbers Day and has Security’s infamous “Jail-n-Bail.” Thursday is Sports Day and includes the ever popular “Icelandic Fear Factor.” The week ends with a St. Patrick’s Day theme and the Karaoke Finals. The festivities actually have already begun. Donations of services and items to be auctioned off on air are already being collected by your fund drive representatives. If you have an item or a service you’d like to donate, contact your local representative or Storekeeper 1st Class Travis Wieneke at 4550 and find out how you can assist this worthy cause. Also this Sat., Mar. 4, contestants who want to participate in the Karaoke competition will be recording their songs. Show up at the Media Center between 12:30 and 4:30 p.m. to make your recording. We’ll play all performances through- out the week and audience members will call in pledges. The top three money-makers in the adult and children’s categories will perform live Fri. Mar. 17, in the afternoon. Donations will continue to be accepted through these performances. The win- ners will be the ones who make the most money. During Mediathon, everything AFN does is for money; even the music we play. Each song will cost at least $1 and, if you don’t like what’s playing, you can pay $2 to have the song bumped from the air or $3 to have it bumped and replaced with one you like better. As the song prices increase so does the cost to bump and replace. For example, if the requestor paid $10 for the current song playing, then bumping would cost $11 and bumping and replacing it with another song of the “bumpers” choice would cost them a $12 donation. Last year the highest a song’s donation went was more than $150 ... for one song! Last year Mediathon raised more than $40,000 for the two charities. This year with your generosity we know NASKEF can do better. If you have something you’d like to offer as an auction item, whether it’s merchandise or a service, call Wieneke at 4550 and he’ll make the arrangements to pick it up. If you’d like to volunteer during the week, call 4550 and we’ll get your contact information and pass it to our coordinators. But, most importantly, tune in to 104.1 FM or Roller Channel 21 March 13 - 17 and enjoy the fun! Navy Marine Corps Relief Society: Provides education assistance to spouses overseas Story by PHI Nathan Guimont The Spouse Tuition Aid Program (STAP), offered by the Navy/Marine Corps Relief Society, is a need-based education assistance program designed to provide overseas-based spouses of active duty Sailors and Marines (on accompanied tours) with an opportunity to pursue an undergraduate, graduate or occupational educa- tion goal. “This is a tremendous advantage that spouses have over other spouses stationed stateside,” said Lt. Travis Hartman, Commander Navy Region Europe Navy/Marine Corps Relief Society Coordinator. “Because this program is only offered overseas it would behoove anyone to take advantage of this great program,” he said. “The focus of STAP is the completion of a degree or certificate program that will provide increased occupational opportunities for spouses of active duty mili- tary members,” said Margaret Copson, Director of the Navy/Marine Corps Relief Society in Naples, Italy. Because contributions from Sailors and Marines are given back to other Sailors and Marines in need, this particular program is fully funded by the Society’s Reserve Fund. STAP provides a grant of up to 50 percent of the tuition cost, not to exceed $350 per term for undergraduate studies and $400 per term for graduate studies, up to a maximum of $l,750-$2,000 per year. “STAP funds will not be used for pursuing a second Bachelors or Masters degree.” said Copson. “Therefore, applicants must be seeking their first undergrad- uate or graduate degree.” Any applications for STAP should be made during scheduled dates regardless of any school attended or degree program. According to Copson, the next available dates to make an application appoint- ment for STAP are now through April 3 for term dates ranging from March 27 - May 19. During 2005, the Navy/Marine Corps Relief Society awarded 347 grants, totaling $102,103 toward the Spouse Tuition Aid Program. However, applicants should be aware that submission of an application does not guarantee tuition aid nor does an award made for one term assure continued fund- ing for future terms. A,T. MAHAN HIGH SCHOOL SY 2005-2006 Parent-Teacher-Student Conferences will be held March 6 in the Multi-Purpose Room (MPR). Students with their last name beginning with A-K 8-11 a.m. and L- Z are scheduled for noon - 3 p.m. Questions, comments, or concerns, call Sheleta Friley at 7008.
