Brown-Gold Buses For Hangar Workers A recent addition of two new bus routes, Brown and Gold, was established for the convenience of Naval Station personnel in get- ting to and from their jobs at the hangars. The routes were designed to pick-up and deliver personnel whose jobs are located at the hangars. These buses cover such areas as the enlisted barracks, the service club and the officer’s quarters. Their hours of operation are two hours each in the morning, afternoon and evening, and are broken down as follows: from 6:00 to 8:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and between 4:00 and 6:00 during the afternoon. Outstanding devotion to duty and exemplary military bearing has earned Raymond H. Lester, PN3, USN, and A3C Melvyn A. Doerhoff, USAF, “Sailor and Airman of the Month” awards for August. Raymond H. Lester, PN3, USN Fire Prevention Concerns Everyone Fire prevention concerns every- one, from the aircraft mechanic on the line to the housewife in her kitchen. A safe, careful worker can avoid the scourge of fire and still complete his job. Don’t wait until it is too late to give a thought to fire safety. Approxiamtely 12,000 people lost their lives in fires in the United States last year. They were or- dinary people, but somewhere along the line they missed the boat on the sea of fire safety. Chief Robinson urges each and everyone at Naval Station, Kefla- vik, to take a personal interest in fire safety on the job and in your home or quarters. The cost of fire safety is small, the rewards great. Lester, a third-class Personnel- man with COMBARLANT, was chosen for his general job know- ledge and efficiency, personal ap- pearance and military bearing and attitudes. He is a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and attended Taylor Allderic High School. He has been in the Navy for two years and two months and has been assign- ed to Keflavik since his arrival from Argentia, Newfoundland. Lester’s father, Mr. George H. Young, resides at 533 Briar-Cliff Road in Pittsburgh. A3C Melvyn A. Doerhoff, USAF Airman Doerhoff won his award in competition with airman from the 57th Fighter Interceptor Squadron and the 1971st Com- munications Squadron. He enlist- ed in the Air Force June 20, 1960 and upon graduation from basic training, attended the Auto-Pilot and Compass School at Chanute AFB Rantool, Illinois. He was chosen for the August honors because of his character, Surcharge Raised For Per Diem Diners Disbursing officials reminded officers and civilians this week that appropriation legislation for Fiscal Year 1962 has raised the surcharge rate to $2.50 per day for those subsisting in govern- ment messes while on per diem. The rate which prevailed from 1954 through Fiscal Year 1961 was $2.25 for those in the per diem trvel status. Sgt. Katynsky Gets 3rd Commendation A special ceremony this week in the office of Col. O.
