4 WHITE FALCON Saturday, April 28, 1962 Basketball Lacks Number; Compensates by Competition Keflavik basketball made up in close competition what it lacked in numbers when two forfeitures and two cancel- lations offered fans the only two games played last week. The first of these pitted Navy®' Admin against NavCommSta dur- ing the 6 p.m. clash, giving the Personnelmen a win of four points over their opponents, 34-30. Corps- men Jim Gibson and Carrol Moody were the twin-guns for the winners with 13 and 12. Jim Goss- ard, for NavCommSta, contributed 13. The 7 p.m. encounter proved a thriller as the Marines squeezed by a tenacious USNSGA quintet, 38-37. Marine Bob Longyear brought home the bacon, netting 20 for his team. USNSGA had no high men, the scoring being evenly divided. Other basketball news received from the Station Field House in regard to more tilt action. Officials are encouraging all interested teams to contact Ext. 5191 if they desire to enter their teams in the Summer Basketball League. Teams must be formed not later than May 23. Briefly noted, the Volleyball league will hold play-offs start- ing April 30 at 6 p.m. to deter- mine the station championship between the top four teams. To date, these teams are: AFI, Navy Supply, 57th FIS and ComBar- Lant. Next week, five shows register for our viewers’ pleasure. “Andy Griffith” needs hardly any intro- duction, nor does “Decoy,” an adult adventure series. “All Star Golf” leaves no ques- tion in anyone’s mind, but the re- maining two shows might be a bit of mystery. “Accent” will be on a heavy note, bringing history, social changes, politics, ideals, and cur- rent events to the attention of the world. 1, 2, 3, Go! is the title of a new childrens show, and adventure series, which stars a young boy. Currently the rage of kiddie-TV' in the U.S., we are pleased to present it in Iceland. LETTER OF COMMENDATION is presented Warren D. Hockman, YN1, April 4, by NavCommSta Commanding Officer, Cdr James J. McMullan. The commendation cited Hockman for, “evincing an out- standing professional capabilty, qualities of leadership beyond rate and age, and a social presence which directly affected relationships with the Icelandic Government and other service commands in the area.” f——----------1------------ Sports Quiz Can you identify the following sports terms? 1. Weiss,. RMSN; Dean E. Cunningham, RM2; and Herb A. Schmidt, RMSN. Standng is Carroll B. Cole, RMCA. Since the Navy assumed responsibility of the Com- munications Station here last summer, many favorable changes have taken place and communication coverage on. and off the island has doubled. NavCommSta provides communi- cations for all military operations at Keflavik and controls air to ground communications with MATS and nearly all other mili- tary aircraft. High security measures are con- stantly observed by the three hundred enlisted men and 13 of- ficers assigned to the station. About 50 per cent of these men are radiomen who handle opera- tion of the equipment. The other half include electronics technic- ians in charge of maintenance and repair, supply personnel and yeo- men. NavCommSta operates transmit- ter and receiver sites as well as other outlying sites on the island. It also controls the message cen- ters in the Navy Hangar and building 752. The command head- ------------------------------- quarters is located in building 839. Commander James J. Mc- Mullan, USN, is commanding of- ficer. NavCommSta was established by the Secretary of the Navy on April 15, 1961 for development, purposes and became an active unit under military direction of the Commander, U.S. Naval Forces, Iceland on July 1, 1961. Speedy, reliable and accurate communications has long been one of the most important factors in successful naval operations in peace and war. Radio is the Navy’s major means of communication. In addition to being very rapid, radio is the only effective way of coordinating the many activities of Naval forces operating, as they do, on a world- wide basis. EXTRA CURRICULAR studies by two local Marine sergeants earned the pair plaudits from Marine Barracks CO, LtCol R.R. Miner, April 10. GySgt R.E. Skinner, center, completed the Officers’ Basic Extension Course, consisting of 21 sub-courses and 68 lessons. It takes at least 300 hours of study to complete. GySgt George Fey, right, received a completion certificate from the Armed Forces Institute for American History II.
