Mariner II Leaves
Earth's Gravitation
4 Million Mi. Out
New York (AFPS) — Mariner
II, the instrumented spacecraft
launched toward Venus from Cape
Canaveral Aug. 27, has fully
escaped the earth’s gravitational
pull and is picking up speed.
Scientists at the California In-
stitute of Technology report that
the 447-pound space laboraory
has passed the four million mile
point where the sun’s gravita-
tional pull becomes stronger than
the earth’s. The sun—90 million
miles away—is accelerating Ma-
riner toward its target. ___
The schedule calls for Mariner
II to pass Venus at the end of
its 180-million-mile trip on Dec.
14, when it will transmit data on
the neighboring planet.
The space vehicle has been
steadily decelerating from its in-
itial escape velocity of 25,551 mph
to 6,448 mph. Now accelerating,
it is expected to reach a maxi-
mum speed of about 96,000 mph
before passing Venus.

Whether Retiring, Separating or
Reenlisting - See Chief Archibald
About Your Benefits as a Navyman
By J. A. Hamilton, PN1
Take a good look at G. C.
Archibald, PNC, USN of the U.S.
Naval Station. Before his tour in
Iceland is completed, he will un-
doubtedly personally contact 90
per cent of all enlisted personnel
attached to this station or sup-
porting commands.
Chief Archibald’s primary duty
will be counciling enlisted men’ on
the various benefits available to
them and helping them to deter-
mine their future, both in the
Navy and in civilian life. Under
a recently revised Bureau of
Naval Personnel Instruction’, the
Reenlistment Program calls for
each command to have a Career
Information Councilor who must
personally contact individuals who
have completed one year in the
Navy and at several intervals be-
fore their enlistment is completed.
The objective of the new reenlist-
ment program is to insure all en-
listed personnel are aware of their
benefits and programs available
to them.
In preparation for this program,
Chief Archibald attended a two
week seminar under COMNA-
VAIRLANT at Norfolk, Virginia
where he was briefed on all the
latest programs an’d benefits avail-
able. He was told at this time
the “old strong arm method” was
out the hatch as a means of re-
enlisting personnel. Chief Archi-
bald will be available for present-
ing lectures or discussions to var-
ious groups or organizations
throughout the Keflavik area. He
will also be looking for qualified
petty officers from each depart-
ment to assist him in passing the
word on Career Counciling.
Chief Archibald’s past experi-
ence makes him a well qualified
man for the job. Having over
eighteen years in the Navy, he
has seen duty on destroyers, de-
stroyer staffs, amphibious ship
and staffs, enlisted classification
duty and supervisor of personnel
offices at Annapolis, Maryland
and Headquarters, First Naval
District, Boston, Massachusetts.
As far as being versed in Fam-
ily Benefits, the Chief has a nice
family of four. He reluctantly has
left behind in Newburyport, Mas-
sachusetts his wife, Jean, and
three children—Carolyn, age 8;
Glenn’, age 7; and Sandra, age 6.

is four years old. A member of
the Keflavik club since July, 1962,

care of all club funds and for
keeping accounts and records of
all their transactions. In addition,
she and the other new officers
will plan a budget for the NCO
Wives’ Club, making disburse-
ments from the funds of the club
in accordance with same.
Serving in the final club office,
that of parliamentarian, is Mrs.
Virginia Markesse, a member of
the NCO Wives’ Club since Nov-
ember, 1961. Virginia’s job will
be to assure that all proceedings
are run in’ order and to challenge
all errors; also to revise or amend
the constitution, should this be-
come desirable, with the approval
of a majority of active members.
Virginia has two children, Teresa,
four; and Gerard, ten.
These ladies have filled the vac-
ancies of Edie Hinderliter, Eunice
Hamilton, Jeanne Mercer, Connie

installation dinner honoring the
new officers will be held on Tues-
day, October 30th at 7:00 p.m.,
in the Reading Room of the NCO
Club.
